Adam's run to support EVMS!
EVMS is a rewarding place to work and a great community to be a part of. I’m running the Shamrock Marathon as part of my own therapeutic journey in overcoming health challenges associated with ulcerative colitis. I’m hopeful that in my own journey, I can be a part of someone else’s journey in this community that may go on someday to help someone like me. I'm raising funds for the EVMS Fund. The EVMS Fund is critical to the school's education, research and patient care missions. By supporting scholarships, curriculum enhancements, technology upgrades, research equipment, faculty recruitment, the Strelitz Diabetes Center and other vital needs, the EVMS Fund provides vital tools for more health professionals to receive state-of-the-art education and training so they can make an impact on the lives of others. Katelyn's run to support children and families!
Katelyn Swiader, MS, CCC-SLP is a Speech-Language Pathologist at EVMS Ear, Nose, & Throat Surgeons.

Katelyn has chosen this running event as her first return to running after returning to work full time since having children. Katelyn is inspired to use this event and fundraising opportunity as a motivator to get back to challenging herself with running all while doing it for a cause she believes in. As a young mother, Katelyn has learned first hand that it truly does take a village to raise your children, and that it is very easy for parents to avoid carving out time to take care of their own health as your overwhelmed with all of your parent and life responsibilities. She is proud of her EVMS community for offering the Minus 9 to 5 program for families, so that they may find their village and receive the support they need along the journey of raising children.

Minus 9 to 5's mission is to identify and bridge the gaps in our current system, to fill holes where necessary, and to expand services to all families in need of reliable prenatal and postpartum health care.

A child GROWS, DEVELOPS and LEARNS from the time a woman discovers she’s pregnant through the child’s fifth birthday. Preparing Hampton Roads' families from CONCEPTION TO KINDERGARTEN is exactly why Minus 9 to 5 exists. Minus 9 to 5 unites a variety of COMMUNITY STAKEHOLDERS dedicated to improving the lives of our region’s youngest residents and their families.

Dr. Winnie Lo's run to benefit cancer research!
I'm excited to run the Shamrock Half Marathon with the Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) Cancer Research Fund as my beneficiary! EVMS serves a large catchment area of patients between the seven cities of the Hampton Roads. We treat patients with colorectal, liver, pancreas, breast cancers as well as melanoma and sarcoma. Our team strives to better care for the community by delivering excellent care, training future surgeons, and learning how we can improve current cancer care.

Anika's run to support CHOW!
Anika Shah, MD25, is raising funds to support Choosing Healthy Options and Wellness, CHOW, a Community Engaged Learning initiative at EVMS.

CHOW focuses on combating chronic illnesses, such as hypertension and diabetes, with nutrition and exercise. They seek to educate patients, students and healthcare professionals to pursue healthy eating and exercise. Your support will help with diabetes screenings, cooking classes, activities with working with Monroe Mentors, etc.

Nicole's Run to Support Melanoma Awareness!
Nicole will be running the Marathon at the Shamrock Marathon in Virginia Beach on March 15-17, 2024! She is passionate about running and raising funds, especially for melanoma awareness and education at Eastern Virginia Medical School. The American Academy of Dermatology Association reports that skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States. And, the vast majority of skin cancer deaths are from melanoma. She and her family have made early detection a priority after experiencing the loss of a family member to melanoma. Please support Nicole and her efforts to promote melanoma awareness and education. EVMS is proud to be here for our community, each and every day. We're here for you with comprehensive care, groundbreaking research, and the next generation of dedicated healthcare providers. As the largest biomedical research institute in southeastern Virginia, EVMS focuses its cutting-edge research on the most pressing needs of our community, with implications for patients around the globe.

The EVMS Leroy T. Canoles Jr. Cancer Research Center focuses on the cancer types that are most prevalent in our area - prostate, breast, pancreatic, lung, and head and neck cancers. Our multidisciplinary research team collaborates to find better ways to diagnose, treat, and prevent the recurrence of cancer in our families and neighbors.

Cooks for a Cause
Cooks for a Cause is a revised collection of recipes sold to benefit the EVMS Virginia HIV/AIDS Resource & Consultation Center.

This cookbook is a reflection of the diversity and inclusiveness found in the community, one that embodies our ethnic influences on food and beverages. For a minimum donation of $15, you will receive a copy of Cooks for a Cause. But all donations are welcome!

The Virginia Department of Health reports that as of December 31, 2019, there were 25,696 Virginians living with HIV or AIDS. Of those, 7,853 were in the Eastern Region, which includes Hampton Roads and the Eastern Shore. That accounts for 31 percent of all Virginians with HIV or AIDS — more than any of the other four health regions in the state. Between 300 and 350 cases are diagnosed in the region annually. - VDH 2019 Annual Report

The HIV/AIDS Resource Center offers a range of services including:

Education

Training programs are developed for specific disciplines in the health care industry on a broad range of HIV/AIDS-related issues. Center staff also works with community - based organizations and correctional institutions to provide training on topics such as STDs, Hepatitis and substance use.

Resources

Information and referral services to multiple community resources are provided to persons infected with HIV.

Consultation

Direct consultation between health care providers, community-based organizations and consultants is available.

Consultation team members include physicians, nurse practitioners, dentists, pharmacists, nurses, psychiatrists, psychologists, nutritionists, social workers, case managers, HIV peer educators and outreach specialists.

Media Materials

Technical, audiovisual and educational materials for staff and patient education are available through the resource library.

Library services

Library services are available at no cost. This includes database searches, interlibrary loans, current awareness information and answers to reference questions.

Referrals

Information and referral services to multiple community resources are available for health care providers and persons infected with HIV.
