Emergency Tuition Assistance
Nicaragua is in crisis. As friends of Nicaragua and Escuela Adelante, we come to you for your help. Since April 19, protests demanding political change have resulted in violence, looting and an environment of fear. Many university students have been killed, roadblocks prevent goods and people from moving about the country, and images of violence and chaos are filling media feeds. We are heartbroken for the losses that families around Nicaragua are experiencing.
Although political negotiations between the president and the people are underway, tourism has ground to a halt. Some reports estimate that in the last month, Nicaragua has sustained as much as a $100 million loss in tourism-based income. San Juan del Sur, our small fishing and beach town, is heavily dependent on tourism. We are already feeling the impact of decreased tourism on our community. Hotels and restaurants are closing or laying off workers, costs on even basic goods are rising, and as we head into the low season, relief seems very far away.
For many of our students’ families, this means that even the small tuition they pay – in some cases only $5 or $10 dollars a month, becomes unaffordable. We at Escuela Adelante are committed to our students, staff and families. We know that now more than ever, Nicaragua needs education, inspiration and a positive outlook. We come to you for help: help us keep our programs open. Help us maintain Escuela Adelante as the community center where kids know they are cherished and safe, and where families feel supported. Help us be true to our motto: We are Always Looking Forward.
We currently rely on tuition income to cover roughly 70% of our monthly operational costs. We expect that number to drop in half, at least until high season starts in November. Please help. With an extra $1000 a month to provide emergency Tuition Assistance we can keep our programs open, and offer hope and stability in this very unstable time.
We thank you from the bottom of our hearts, on behalf of Escuela Adelante, our students, their families, and us, personally. We are convinced that as a family, we can bring our students through the next months with gentle guidance and support.
Gratefully,
The Adelante Team
