Friends in Crisis Shelter
Friends in Crisis is the only homeless facility in Killeen, Texas that provides nightly shelter to our brothers and sisters who would otherwise sleep on the streets. However, an unexpected funding shortfall has forced the Friends in Crisis board to temporarily suspend services that assist the Killeen homeless population. Our goal is to make our temporary closure on May 18, 2019 short lived.
Our proximity to Fort Hood means that we see a substantial number of homeless veterans. The work we do aims to provide a place where people can feel secure and are empowered to regain their independence. Without the services Friends in Crisis provides, many of the homeless men and women in our community will not have even their most basic needs met.
This year we have experienced a funding shortfall. As a result, our current reserves are not enough to meet the day-to-day operating costs associated with running the homeless shelter.
We need your help now more than ever. Donations of any size will help reestablish this critical service for some of the most vulnerable in our community. The work we do meets the needs of 75 people each night. The operating costs for the shelter and services we provide average $30,000 a month, or $1,000 per day. Those expenses include:
24-hour staff and security
Daily cleaning
Cooking staff
Food
Providing hygiene items
Utilities
Maintenance
Supplies
We serve more than 750 homeless persons a year. To keep our doors open for the remainder of 2019, we need $250,000. In addition to our GoFundMe, we are seeking more consistent sources of funding through grant writing and other partnerships. We are confident that the shelter doors will reopen soon so that we may restore these much-needed services to the most vulnerable people in our community.
