Feline Rescueof Staten Island

This past September, Avery the kitten was found outside as a stray. He was wet, shivering, and had thick mucus coming from his eyes and nose. A Good Samaritan brought him to the NYC-ACC shelter. This poor baby boy was in terrible shape and suffering from a severe upper respiratory infection (main photo is from his intake at the shelter). Joann Caro, president and founder of Feline Rescue of Staten Island (FROSI) immediately pulled him from the shelter and has been fostering him since. This orange guy is sweet as pie, playful, and curious. He has been recovering well with antibiotics, syringe feeding, and fluids. However, he has since developed a concerning rasp in his chest. He was checked by a vet who believed it to be a symptom of his URI, but this morning his breathing became dangerously shallow. Joann rushed him to Garden State Animal Hospital where is currently admitted. 

Thus far, the vets do not know what is causing his breathing issues and are currently doing diagnostics. The estimate is $3500-5000 for the next 24 hours. This is an astounding cost for Joann and FROSI, a rescue that is already thousands in debt with vet bills due to pulling the majority of cats pulled from the euthanasia list.  Avery was not on the euthanasia list, he was in no shape to wait to be listed.

Feline Rescue of Staten Island (FROSI) desperately needs your help! In 2018, FROSI saved 30% of all NYC-ACC cats placed with rescue groups, as well as more than 50% of cats placed from the At Risk List. For 2019, these numbers are comparable. However, as of September 15th, FROSI will no longer be able to pull cats from the NYC-ACC shelter, unless immediate funding is raised. Immediate funding is needed for excessive outstanding vetting bills, food, litter, medications, transportation, and insurance. 

Many of the cats that FROSI saves have serious medical needs and high vetting costs. FROSI currently has outstanding vetting bills nearing $14,000.  Additionally, with the recent loss of the Mayor's Alliance free transport, FROSI has needed to cover thousands of dollars in transportation costs, including insurance, gas, and tolls. Furthermore, FROSI's insurance for 2020 is upwards of $2500. FROSI has no grants and no funding, and relies solely on donations from the public. FROSI is also 100% volunteer run.

Please help FROSI continue to help the kitties. For many of you that follow the At Risk List and see how many of these high risk cats FROSI saves, you know that losing FROSI will mean lives lost. Prayers and shares are greatly appreciated, however without funding a rescue cannot provide what is needed to save so many animals. All donations are tax-deductible and no donation is too small. Sweet Senior Girl Nicki Needs Your Help.

Nicki's Story:

Sweet senior girl Nicki was brought to the NYC ACC animal shelter on November 20th. Her previous owner dumped her at the shelter,  requesting that she be euthanized. ACC realized that this beautiful panther girl still had a lot of life in her, overturned the owner's request, and gave her the chance to be adopted.

While at ACC, Nicki was a volunteer favorite. One volunteer who fell in love with her wrote: "There's something about Nicki that makes me feel very protective of her. Maybe it's her soft, gentle demeanor, or the way she likes to accept pettings while she's curled up on the blanket in her cat loft. It might be her warm, curious eyes, or the sweet way she sniffs my hand and trusts me without any fuss. But it could be that she's a mature lady who has found herself without a family during the holiday season, a time when no cat should be homeless or all by her lonesome."

During Nicki's stay at the shelter, she contracted a URI (Upper Respiratory Infection). On November 26th, she was placed on ACC's At Risk List for euthanasia. Fortunately, a very caring adopter stepped up for her, and Feline Rescue of Staten Island pulled her off the list. However, almost immediately, Nicki began to crash and needed immediate ER care. Thankfully, her very caring adopter realized this and rushed her to Oradell ER vet, where she has been for the past 24 hours. While at Oradell, Nicki has been in ICU, receiving oxygen treatment, IV fluids, nebulization, and multiple medications and testings. Nicki's vet bill for the past 24 hours is estimated to be more than $5,000. Her adopter is dedicated to giving her the best of care, but needs help with these expenses. Nicki is expected to remain at Oradell for several days, in which case her bill will likely end up being several thousands of dollars more. 

After being sent to ACC  to die by her previous owners,  this sweet little fluff nugget now has a loving forever home, a chance to live out her senior years with someone who will never abandon her again. She needs to pull through this. Please help Nicki's new mom continue to fund her very expensive vet care. At the shelter, seniors are so often overlooked and discarded. This girl needs a chance to make it and prove to that world that her life matters. She is only 12 years old and has many more years to enjoy the good life.

We will update Nicki's photos once Oradell feels it is ok to take photos of her. At this moment, she is in ICU and the vet treating her does not want to add any stress to her wellbeing.
