Tom Gaul's Youth Referee Scholarship
Tom Gaul was one of the most recognized and beloved members of the northern Colorado recreational soccer community due to his enthusiastic involvement over the last 30 years. He was known for his fun-loving, vocal and energetic contributions as a player, coach and referee.
Tom and his sons, Derek and Tyler, took the referee certification course together at Arsenal Colorado when Tyler and Derek were 12 and 14 years old respectively.
As their first professional work experience, Derek and Tyler believed it provided several valuable life and professional lessons (along with some great quality time with their father) that they still use today:
– Being decisive, sometimes without complete information
– Managing people, including parents and players who sometimes get very passionate (emotional)
– Being a leader, and setting the tone for a group while keeping things light, fun and cooperative
Tom passed away on February 7th after a hard-fought battle with cancer. He remained positive and encouraging to the people around him until the very end.
To honor Tom's legacy, Derek and Tyler are working with Arsenal Colorado (a non-profit 501c3) to create a Youth Referee Scholarship Fund to cover the significant fees and equipment costs for in becoming a referee. The scholarship will apply to students under the age of 19. All donations will receive a charity receipt from Arsenal Soccer (previously Fort Collins Soccer Club) for tax filings.
