Growing up in Lockport, hanging out at the Y, and working at Camp Kenan, we were unbelievably blessed during those formidable years to have spent so much time in the light of a very special man, known to us and to many as the Old Gray Goose. Christened Robert Gray and hailing from Worcester, Mass. (Woosta –as he would say), he was “the seventh son of a seventh son,” the son of Mother Goose and a gift to Lockport, NY. He served as Youth Director at the Y and Program Director at camp. He was our North Star.
Through example and words he taught us about life and how to live. His own life, all 157 years, was “A Life Well Lived,” like no other. He was a Christian, humble and spiritual. He was a celebrated man of story and song. He was a man in motion, always running (30 marathons — 3:20 at Boston), hiking, climbing mountains, playing basketball, and riding his bike around Lake Ontario (5 times). He had tree trunk legs, a face carved of stone and elbows that let you know when he was under the hoop. He inspired us, mentored us and made us laugh — a lot!
Though we lost Goose last year, he resides in our hearts forever. A few Goose disciples came away from his memorial service inspired by the man once more. This June, we will ride our bikes around Lake Ontario in his honor, and in the process raise a few dollars for his beloved Camp Kenan.
Riders include Joe Sullivan, Rick Merritt, Ken Haak and Tom Donahue. Bill Neidlinger will drive the support vehicle.
We thank our families, friends and classmates whose names appear on the donor roster. Every penny raised in this campaign benefits the Friends of Camp Kenan, and will be used to help more kids attend camp. The riders are using their own resources to fund their journey.
