Gift upcycled school bags to 250 students in remote Nepal
Nepal has been through too much this year. In recent weeks, young lives were lost in the Gen Z protests. Families are still mourning. Children in villages, far from the cities, are left to wonder what comes next. Fear, uncertainty, and grief have touched every corner of our country.
And yet, even in this moment of pain, Dashain is upon us. Dashain is a time of family, reflection, and the victory of good over evil. A time when we remind ourselves that even in hardship, we give, we share, we dream and we also protect the dreams of the next generation together. For many children in rural Nepal, education is that lifeline, the thing that keeps their dreams alive.
At Chakraviu Nepal, we believe the most powerful gift we can give right now is education. That belief gave birth to "From Jeans to Dreams: Upcycling for Education". Together with communities across Nepal, we have been collecting old denim and transforming it into school bags and stationery pouches for children in rural areas.
These bags are not just ordinary mass manufactured bags. Their impact is threefold:
For Education: A school bag is such a basic need that many of us don’t even stop to think about it. But in rural Nepal, countless children are deprived of it. Many walk miles to school with their books stuffed in torn bags, or wrapped in plastic or cloth sacks that barely last a season. Each upcycled school bag and stationery pouch gifts students with the simple joy of being prepared for school. These bags made from upcycled denim are truly comfortable and durable and we have been able to equip 450+ students from rural Nepal with these upcycled school kits so far.
For the Environment: Each upcycled bag reduces textile waste and saves water. Already, the project has collected 2,500+ pairs of denim, prevented 1,450 kgs of textile waste from being dumped in landfills of Nepal, and repurposed 25 million liters of water.
*As per UN, 10,000 liters of water is used in making a single pair of jeans
For Empowerment: Each bag is handmade locally in Nepal, creating work for artisans and showing that sustainable solutions can be built within our own communities. Alongside bag production, we run awareness campaigns and workshops to teach people about the hidden environmental cost of textile waste and how they can be a part of this upcycling journey which turns problems into possibilities.
For the students, receiving an upcycled school kit is a reminder that their community believes in them, that their education matters, and that they are part of a movement that values both people and planet.
This Dashain, our goal is to reach 250 more students in rural Nepal.
$20 equips 1 student in rural Nepal with:
- An upcycled school bag
- An upcycled stationery pouch
- Hand painted custom art on the upcycled bag
- A day of holistic learning activities
Amid grief and struggle, this is our way to stand for children, for education, and for the future of Nepal. Dashain teaches us that even in hard times, we give. Even in loss, we hope. Even in uncertainty, we build.
Help us turn old jeans into dreams. Give a child education, dignity, and a greener world this Dashain!
