The Seneca Project
In the hills of West Virginia there is a fragile alpine environment known as Seneca Rocks. Seneca has a rich climbing history and is a unique draw for its alpine feel and connection to nature. It is a traditional climbing destination for thousands of climbers across the Mid-Atlantic region.
In 2017, over 40 new climbing gyms opened in the US and 13 opened in Canada. The indoor climbing industry is projected to break the billion-dollar mark by 2021. The rapid growth of indoor climbing is paralleled with similar growth in the outdoors where numbers have doubled at climbing destinations over the past decade.
The effects of the increase in climber traffic to our crags is obvious. Erosion, soil degradation, exposed roots, and trash are just a few of the challenges. Typically, small, focused coalitions of volunteers try to keep up with all of the impacts climbers are creating.
Diane and Andy are climbers at Seneca Rocks and have experienced first-hand the impact the surge of climbers can have on these fragile ecosystems. This story follows the journey of these two climbers as they volunteer their time to organize the climbing community and protect the places they love.
Friends of Seneca is proud to sponsor a film production celebrating Seneca Rocks as a historic climbing destination and the exhaustive work being done to protect the trails around the area. We are telling this story from the climber's perspective with a specific focus on the community participation in keeping Seneca beautiful for future generations and to encourage climbers, wherever they are, to get involved and give back to the crags that give us so much.
For this film to be a success we need your help. Donations will assist in film production and dissemination costs to get maximum exposure and resonance across the outdoor community. Help us tell this story to celebrate our local crag and inspire climbers everywhere to step up and get involved at their climbing areas.
Thanks in advance for your contribution to this project and in helping to get our message out there.
