What happened in Texas?

On September 1st, a Texas law went into effect that bans abortions after 6 weeks of pregnancy. Not only does this timeframe directly conflict with Roe v. Wade, which protects the right to an abortion up to 24 weeks, but it prohibits procedures well before many women even realize they’re pregnant. 

The law creates crippling obstacles for those wishing to terminate their pregnancy in Texas, especially members of our most vulnerable populations. Teenagers, low-income folks and people of color (including undocumented immigrants) are the most at risk, exasperating the monumental divides that already plague American society. Forced birth can cause life-long physical and mental health issues as well as place an extreme economic burden on parents, often trapping them in cycles of poverty for generations. Even without the above reasons, pregnant people simply deserve to choose what happens to their bodies. Such a personal decision should rest in the hands of the one it affects most, and the war on reproductive rights is only increasing in momentum.

What is Fund Texas Choice?

Fund Texas Choice is a non-profit organization that provides transportation and financial services to pregnant people seeking abortions. Because of the restrictive Texas law, many pregnant people must travel to clinics in bordering states to receive the procedure, and once they get there, it’s not free. Without someone to drive them across state lines or help pay for the procedure, many women face unwanted and often dangerous choices.
