What is PERIOD POVERTY?
Can you imagine the unthinkable? That in our land of abundance and opportunity,
16.9 million young girls living in poverty suffer the indignity of not being able to afford menstrual products?
Period poverty refers to a pervasive crisis affecting the lives of countless young women - an inability to access essential menstrual products, hygiene facilities, waste management, and crucial education.
Although you might be unfamiliar with the term, its effects are devastatingly real.
Consider these startling truths:
• Two-thirds of these young girls were unable to afford menstrual products in the past year, with a heartbreaking 50% forced to choose between essential sanitary supplies and food.
• Almost 14.2% of college menstruating individuals experienced period poverty in the last year, an unwarranted hurdle on their path to higher education.
• An overwhelming 84% of teens in poverty have missed school, or know someone who
has, because of period poverty - a setback that disrupts their academic progress and
hampers their future potential.
• Alarmingly, 10% of college menstruating students experience this struggle every
month.
Despite the gravity of the situation, these essential products are not covered by SNAP
or any other welfare program, leaving countless women and girls without fundamental necessities that many of us take for granted.

Go With the Flow has provided schools in Tucson and Phoenix and neighboring areas with over 50,000 period packs- bags that contain tampons, pads, and panty liners. When students at participating schools needs menstrual supplies, they can approach various school staff to obtain a period pack. Schools can contact Go With The Flow for additional packs whenever they are running low, helping to ensure a continuous supply of menstrual products for students at no cost to the school.
