Shaving My COVID Hair For Lung Cancer Awareness!
It’s Lung Cancer Awareness Month (LCAM) and many of you whom know me are aware that Lung Cancer Management has played an important role in my career and is also a disease that I have had a strong passion about since before college.
If you have never been exposed to the statistics around Lung Cancer, the numbers may shock you. In the United States alone, Lung Cancer is the #1 cause of cancer-related deaths each year. Additionally, Lung Cancer kills more people annually than Breast, Prostate and Pancreatic cancer combined. 350 deaths per day are related to Lung Cancer and it accounted for 12.3% of all new cancers identified in 2022. Typically it is identified as a late stage cancer when there are fewer options to manage the disease with curative intent, but when identified, diagnosed and resected at an early stage, patients have a 92% chance of survival at 10-years.
While it has historically been socially associated with significant smoking history, today's Lung Cancer Patient may come from hereditary genetic disorders, environmental exposures such as wildfire smoke, air pollution and even radon exposure in our own homes. These statistics also become much worse when you look globally into less developed regions.
I’ve had a tight buzz haircut since college and I’m a ginger, so when the COVID lockdown began in 2020, I took the personal liberty to experiment with the patience to grow out my hair - having the ultimate intention to donate it to make a wig for a cancer patient, preferably for a lung cancer patient whom may also have naturally red or light hair and would want to preserve their identity. It’s now nearly 4 years later and my hair is well past the minimum donation length of 10” - somehow exceeding 20”+ in length! Progression photos are below, because - who doesn't want to look?
While researching for this endeavor, I learned that there are no hair donation groups focused specifically on adults with cancer. Therefore, in addition to donating my hair to hairweshare.org , I’ve decided to organize this GoFundMe to drive dollars specifically to lung cancer patients whom need our support. Utilizing my network of friends and professional allies - many whom also work to address the
Go2 (formerly the Bonnie J Addario Lung Cancer Foundation) is an organization whom direct dollars directly to patients whom need support to travel to/from institutions so they may participate in meaningful clinical trials and get the care required to treat their disease.
Money donated will go directly to benefit Go2 for Lung Cancer, and any donation will help make an impact. Your donation should also be eligible for company matching, if your company supports that.
A sincere Thank You in advance for your contributions. No matter the size you are able to contribute, I cannot thank you enough. This is a cause that I have been and continue to be passionate about, and I greatly appreciate you support this on my behalf.
I will finally end this experiment and revert to my traditional haircut on Saturday, November 25th, 2023.
If you have questions, please do not hesitate to reach out.
