This week was meant to mark GOALS Haiti’s 15th anniversary.

Instead, Hurricane Melissa has left our communities flooded and our fields underwater. But our team is already doing what GOALS does best: showing up, rebuilding, and leading with heart.

The Impact of Hurricane Melissa

For 15 years, GOALS Haiti has been a safe, steady space for hundreds of children. Through football, education, leadership, and community service, our youth have learned teamwork, confidence, and purpose. Many have literally grown up on these fields.

Now, those same spaces, symbols of safety, joy, and hope, need repair.

In Bossan, floodwaters filled homes for three days, forcing families to flee. Crops were lost, wells were contaminated, and our football field — the heart of our youth programs — was completely submerged. The community garden and tree nursery, where children learn to grow food and care for the environment, were also wiped out.

In Destra, flooding damaged homes and disrupted daily life. Across both sites, families now face greater risk of cholera and other waterborne diseases.

How We’re Responding

Our Haitian-led team didn’t wait for help to arrive. Even before the water began to recede, alumni coaches and staff were checking on families, clearing debris, and starting relief efforts. They continue to lead recovery by:

✅ Delivering emergency food and hygiene kits including rice, beans, soap, sanitary items, and water purification tablets.

✅ Cleaning and repairing homes, the football field, and community gardens.

✅ Providing mental-health and emotional support to help kids process fear, loss, and disruption.

✅ Teaching cholera prevention and hygiene education to protect families as disease risk rises.

At GOALS Haiti, we’ve always believed in the power of a soccer field not just as a place to play, but as a foundation for hope, learning, and community. In rural Haiti, where daily life is filled with uncertainty, that field becomes so much more: a classroom, a safe haven, and a launchpad for the next generation of leaders. Today, 350 children count on GOALS every single day. They come to play soccer and to receive a hot meal, join in tutoring sessions, take part in youth leadership and community projects.

All of this is led by our all-Haitian team which includes 17 GOALS alumni who once stood on that same field and now guide the next generation with pride and purpose.

Haiti is facing increased insecurity and growing challenges. With many schools closed GOALS stays open and remains a much needed constant. We offer structure, opportunity and joy when kids need it most.

For many, daily life is marked by uncertainty and adversity. At GOALS Haiti, we believe in the power of action to inspire change. For over a decade, we’ve worked in the most underserved rural areas, using soccer as a tool to build healthier, stronger communities. Our programs provide access to education, health resources, and leadership opportunities for over 400 children, with a special focus on empowering girls. Through daily purposeful play, meals, health workshops, youth leadership training and mentorship, we give them the tools to thrive, even in the face of adversity.

GOALS was founded with the belief that soccer could be a powerful tool in rural Haiti to engage children in sports, health, education, and environmental initiatives, ultimately improving their daily lives and driving sustainable positive change.

Fourteen years since our inception, we see the fruits of that labor. Every day, 300 children come to play soccer, learn life skills, receive a meal, and engage in community service projects like our community gardens. We now have 17 GOALS alumni employed as coaches, teachers, and tutors, with our local staff keeping our daily programs running.

The extreme insecurity and gang violence impacting daily life for every Haitian is deeply concerning. We operate on high alert, prioritizing the safety of our staff and participants. Despite these challenges, we hear from parents and community members about the immense value of our steady presence. Our program provides a safe space where kids can be kids, play and relieve the stress of the day.

Our newest coach, Robihno, grew up in our program and is now giving back. "The GOALS program taught me so much and played a big role in shaping my life. It's a humbling feeling to see I am now a leader, and kids are looking up to me. I can help them just like my coach helped me. The kind of positive change I want to make is ensuring the next generation of kids has the foundation to become the leaders Haiti needs."

The challenges facing Haiti have never been greater. There are multiple crises impacting the ability for families to carry on daily living activities and provide for basic needs.

Inflation in Haiti is at a record high, and most of the population cannot afford to purchase enough food or other essentials. Multi-year droughts have also impacted crops. As a result, two out of three households are going hungry, putting them at increased risk for disease and other health problems.

Our staff is committed to providing our daily programs without interruption as we all navigate these troubling times. Our programs provide a safe outlet for kids to learn and play plus provide an essential daily meal.

Soccer is the most popular sport in Haiti and youth love to play it. Through their love of the game they join our programs of education, community gardening, health, and leadership training. Soccer is the way in. Fun on the field leads to better lives off of it. 
 
My favorite part of the day is to see young people coming from all directions with excitement in their step to join their teammates and coaches every afternoon. Older kids help the younger kids and together they have daily practice and also to share a meal, which for many is the one meal of the day they can count on.
 
GOALS provides young people the opportunity to get an education and  to learn skills to live healthier lives. After-school programs are rare in Haiti and youth are eager to participate. Being part of something bigger and giving back to their communities gives them a sense of pride.
