Greater Astoria Historical Society Flood Recovery
The Greater Astoria Historical Society, chartered in 1985, is a non-profit organization supported by the Long Island City community. We are dedicated to preserving our past and using it to promote our community's future. The Society hosts field trips, walking tours, slide presentations, and guest lectures to schools and the public.
Like so many of our neighbors, we were directly affected by Hurricane Ida's historic rainfall. A few years ago we lost the space we had been occupying for close to 20 years, and had to store the majority of our irreplaceable records and collection items in temporary vaults - unfortunately these vaults were flooded during the storm with a few inches of water! At the moment, we don't know the extent of the damage, but know we are at risk of losing some incredibly important items due to lingering water damage and mold.
Like all non-profits, our funds have been severely impacted by COVD-19 and our inability to host the in person tours and events that fund most of our programming and operations budget. Because time is of the essence when dealing with water damage, we are humbly asking the community for immediate support while we race to rehome our collection in a safer area and treat the damage that has already been done. In order to properly do so, we are in need of funds for new storage boxes, archival bags, and payment for labor to move boxes, and rebuild shelving, as well as dispose of the items beyond repair.
