GreenEarth Schoolhouse #school4abrighterfuture
I live in the Philippines, a country where one-fifth of the population lives below the poverty line. The latest figures from the Philippine Statistics Authority show that farmers and fishermen are among the poorest in our country. Farmers make less than 150 USD a month and rarely finish elementary school! Majority only make it to 5th grade. Children lose their motivation to study because they lack the resources to sustain their education (public school is free, but school supplies, laptops, project costs, field trips are not), and the urgency to earn a living in order to help augment their family income as early as possible is always pressing
Three years ago, I met Romnick Blanco, a farmer's child who chose to be different. He attended public school. His mother heard about a new foundation nearby called GreenEarth Heritage Foundation and so they went to apply for him to become a sponsored child. Green Earth aims to preserve the environment, to adhere to sound and sustainable organic agricultural practices , and to alleviate poverty through livelihood, education, and community development. Romnick walked more than 4 hours round-trip , crossing rivers and unpaved roads in order to get to GreenEarth. In 2011, Romnick became a sponsored child of GreenEarth where he learned English, computer literacy, and attended values formation classes. Seeing his grit, GreenEarth helped him compete for a scholarship at the International School Manila where he became the first farmer’s child to be accepted by the school in its 92-year history. He is now a sophomore at Harvard University! He is the 7th out of 9 children, and the first to even get past middle school in his family. I would like to help rural poor children from Romnick’s community have better quality education right where they live under the auspices of GreenEarth’s “LIVE, HOPE, DREAM” educational initiative, by providing them with the necessary venue to do so. Please help me raise the funds to build a school house for the children of GreenEarth!
I am trying to raise money in other ways too. In October, I worked on putting together an online fundraising concert. Hope you enjoy watching it!
