Clairton, PA Greenhouse Project #clairtongrows

Welcome to the City of Clairton, PA, located outside of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The nearly 7,000 people that live here have gone 12 years without a grocery store. While Pittsburgh and larger cities are thriving, small towns are still struggling in many ways. Clairton is what experts call a “food desert”. You have to drive miles out of it just to get healthy food.
That presents a problem because nearly 30% of Clairton residents do not have access to a vehicle. Each trip to a real grocery store takes hours by bus and is limited to the number of bags you can carry with you.
Imagine 12 years of this. Imagine having a grocery store getting your hopes up in “surveying” the area, doing a “feasibility study” and then deciding that you and your neighbors don’t make enough money to support the kind of store that they want to build. Imagine what it must be like for sick and elderly people, taking the bus for 3 hours just to pick up simple things like lettuce or onions!
To solve this issue, Greenhouses for Everyone (G4E), a Pittsburgh-based nonprofit, is building a new greenhouse which will be located on top of Produce Marketplace, a local corner store run by Economic Development South. The greenhouse will drastically increase Produce Marketplace’s ability to serve the community, and the vegetables and herbs will provide the residents of Clairton with the healthy options they need and want.
The success of the fundraiser will determine the final build, which will determine what produce can be grown, and in what quantities. Ideally, lettuce, tomatoes, cilantro, and basil will be available for individual purchase and will also be sold to local restaurants.
Greenhouses for Everyone believes that everyone should have access to healthy food. The agricultural technology is there to make it happen, as are we. With as little as $6,000 raised, we can supply the Produce Marketplace and its patrons with hundreds of plants per year. We can triple that output at $10,000. We can reduce operating costs with solar power if we go higher. That’s a plan for real, sustainable food, available right in the heart of a well-populated food desert.
Please help us meet our goal and eliminate this food desert. You can help by contributing to the campaign or sharing it with your friends, family, and across your social media platforms. This is a project where every small donation can make a huge difference.
For your contribution of $100 or more, we would love to send you a gift of our custom made t-shirts!
For contributions of $500 or more, we will send you a custom plaque with a special thank you and your name on it!

Targets:
$6,000.00 will cover permits and the greenhouse structure with G4E donating equipment to achieve a level of production of around 800 plants per year.
$10,000.00 allows us to triple the number of plants, and diversifies the greenhouse to include a wider variety of leafy greens as well as microgreens, massively increasing the nutrient density of the greenhouse project, and potentially allowing the greenhouse to grow a surplus that they can sell to local restaurants.
Bonus levels:
At $15,000 we can have solar electricity set up to offset the electricity usage of the lights.
At $20,000 we can have solar heat set up to offset the natural gas use.
At $25,000 we can have an aquaponic system and offset the use of nutrients.
At $30,000 we can have a natural CO2 generation capacity and achieve 100% sustainability.
At $35,000 we can provide for all needs for 3 years: seeds, growing media, spare pumps, lights, etc.
