As the Beatles so aptly put it:  HELP!  We have had about 100 cats on average this year and the hits just keep on coming.  We get many injured, abused, emaciated, dehydrated, messed up cats that need medical attention when they come through the door.  Red Reddington came in with a split jaw and a shattered leg.  Like Red, we don't give up.  To keep our spirits up, we name our rock 'n' roll animals after friends, musicians, artists, actors, characters and other misfits we like.

Char, our director, has been doing animal rescue for 14 years, always volunteer-run facilities, including our permanent shelter which has been ours for 4 years.  All donations are spent ONLY on the animals.

Some people get the gift of having a star or asteroid named after them.  But Handsome Dick Manitoba (& all of the Dics), all of The Ramones, The Cramps & NY Dolls, Rockets Redglare, Monoman, Helen Wheels, Andre Williams, Howie Pyro, Howlin' Wolf, Jim Dickenson, Willie Dixon, Roky Erickson, Doug Sahm, Speedy Sparks, Freddy Fender, Augie Myers, Flaco Jimenez, Alex Chilton, Ronnie Dawson, Jalacy Hawkins, Hank Ballard, Harry Dean Stanton, Tish & Snookie, Ray & Dave Davies, Satchmo, Wanda Jackson, Robert Quine, Jimmy Jones, Ubu, Soupy Sales, Drew Carey, Dion, John Cale, Lou Reed, Nico, Mo Tucker, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Sister Ray, Theremin, My Back Pages, Positively 4th St, Sonic Reducer, Have Love Will Travel, Reg Presley, Warren Oates, Sam Peckinpah, Cool Hand Luke, Uncle Junior, Merv, Stiv Bators and Jimmy Zero, Ernie Anderson, Michael McKean, Harry Shearer, Christopher Guest, Alfred E. Neuman, "Mad Daddy," and The Hound, are just a few of the names that have, over the past 14 years, appeared on rabies certificates for cats we've rescued and adopted out. We've named almost all of the cats after friends & celebs...except for The Advanced Whisker System 2000 and a very few others.

It's kinda fun to have an adopter call to inquire about Handsome Dick Manitoba. Or a vet tech call to ask how to spell Covfefe. It also helps me remember who is who if I name them after people or songs I like.  Lately we've named some of the cats after characters in The Blacklist TV show, friends of Red Reddington.  And we've given them all songs too.

We have a room called Heaven where sanctuary cats with health issues like Muddy Waters, Little Walter, Petey Wheatstraw, Dolomite, Marjoe, Chas Chandler, et al live.  We just don't like killin' stuff, ya know?

To those of you who ask why not help people, we help them too along the way--out of our own pockets.  We'll give anyone a ride to rehab.  We've given rides to social services, people shelters, soup kitchens, storage facilities.  We've brought blankets to the homeless and food and toys for the kids.   So, yeah, we help people along the way.
