Hello, I’m Portia M. Henderson, President and Founder of Healing the Roots Foundation. Our mission is deeply personal to me—it's about empowering children to rise above adversity and flourish emotionally and academically. Every child deserves to grow up in a world where they feel loved, understood, and equipped to navigate life’s challenges. But for too many children, especially those who have experienced trauma, understanding and managing their emotions can be overwhelming.

I faced my own battles with trauma and emotional pain growing up, and I know what it feels like to be a child lost in the storm of emotions with nowhere to turn. It was through these struggles that I found my calling: to help children who are going through similar experiences. This is why I founded Healing the Roots Foundation and created Nina’s Coping Toolbox, a curriculum designed to teach children essential social-emotional learning (SEL) and coping tools.

Our mission focuses on fostering social-emotional learning through the teaching of CASEL’s SEL concepts and essential coping tools. We also emphasize providing social-emotional healing through targeted therapy for mental health support. This program doesn't just teach children how to cope; it empowers them to understand their emotions, build resilience, and find their voices. We also create nurturing learning environments with initiatives like Quiet Spaces in classrooms, where children can find peace and gather their thoughts.

We are raising funds to launch our program in Fall 2024 or Spring 2025. Your generous contributions will help us provide much-needed culturally competent counseling sessions, resources for educators, paid tutoring for teachers and retired teachers, and serene environments where children can manage their emotions and thrive. These funds will also support the hiring of staff essential to delivering these life-changing programs effectively.
