Heart of an Ace, Inc

Nasrat Ahmad Yar, a dedicated local national interpreter who bravely served alongside U.S. Army Special Forces in Afghanistan for a decade, brought his family to the United States after the collapse of the Afghan government in August 2021. After settling in Alexandria, Virginia, Nasrat wasted no time in securing employment as a tow truck driver and rideshare driver to provide for his loved ones.

Nasrat's commitment to his family and community was unwavering. He always extended a helping hand to friends and family and readily assisted anyone in need. He was immensely proud to be in the U.S., and grateful for the safety and opportunities that would be afforded to his four young children.

Tragically, on July 3rd, 2023, Nasrat's life was cut short when he was shot and killed while working an extra late shift for a rideshare company in Washington D.C. This devastating loss has left a void that cannot be filled in the lives of numerous family members and friends. Nasrat was the sole provider for his wife and four children, aged 15 months to 13 years.

One year ago, I asked the question: How much is a human life worth?

My name is Matthew Young and I’m fundraising to help evacuate an Afghan family of four. This is the same family that started my journey helping our Afghani allies escape,

evade and sustain themselves while they awaited evacuation. 

I’m thrilled to say that after 12 months of heartache, prayers and hard work we have a

solution to get them to temporary safety in a nearby country while their Special Immigrant Visas are processed. The last fundraiser paid for passports, and to help keep the family safe and fed over the past year. I’m asking for your help in raising the funds to #finishthemission. Funds will be accepted by the registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit Heart of anAce so all contributions are tax deductible. The goal is to raise $11,000 for the following:

$4000 for safe transport and one-year visas.

$1000 to establish a household (first and last month rent, and a security deposit, as well as vital utility and household costs in this new country).

$500 per month for rent, utilities, groceries and virtual school for the children.

The family will have to renew the visas after one year if their visa processing has not been completed.

Recap of the general situation: It has been one year since Kabul fell to the Taliban. Due to the rapid withdrawal of US forces and collapse of the Afghan Army, 10’s of thousands of Afghans are still awaiting evacuation. Currently there are at least 74,000 SIV applicants still awaiting evacuation; when combined with their dependents this totals at least 334,000 people. The US Department of State is currently evacuating approximately 200 people each week; at that pace it will take 140 years to #finishthemission. This is obviously unacceptable and not sustainable for the people who were left behind.

One of my closest Marine Corps friends (that I served with from 1999-2003), Charles

Cooper, continued to deploy as an EOD bomb disposal technician. He met “A” the father of this family.

“A” worked for coalition forces for just under 10 years interpreting and “demining” which involves removing land mines that were a risk to both civilians and our troops. He was most recently a radio contractor for l3harris attached to the Afghan Special Forces. He stayed with his job until the fall of Kabul, and I have seen digital copies of paperwork that verify his activities, as well as having spoken to his direct supervisor at L3 Harris. “A” and his wife have a pre-school aged son, and an early elementary school aged daughter (who are extremely adorable). This is a hardworking, intelligent man who will be an asset to whatever community he ultimately resides in.

I have not been idle in this cause over the past twelve months. I have been a volunteer with Task Force Argo since September 2021; Aces and Eights since October and helped to found Heart of an Ace in January 2022. These organizations have relocated thousands of our allies both in conjunction with, and also separate from, the US government efforts. Through these organizations, I have helped raise and distribute over $200,000 in humanitarian aid to feed and shelter thousands of our allies left behind. I have personally assisted in the safe relocation of more than 50 Afghans.

Funds raised will go to the family’s physical evacuation, legal fees, and assistance in setting up their household once they arrive in their new temporary home. 100% of the funds will go to help the family. Once they are out of harms way, I will provide more information about them. Any additional funds raised will go to allow other people to escape.

Heart of an Ace and Project Exodus from the Moral Compass Federation have teamed up to assist the Sharifi family, Rafi (Dad) and Aamina (daughter), with shelter, food, transportation, legal fees, rent,and quality of life.

This letter requests your urgent intervention to assist Afghan toddler Aamina Sharifi, a 2-year-old

victim-survivor of the horrific attack on a maternity ward outside Kabul in 2020. Aamina was shot in the leg as an infant. We moved her to Pakistan to see specialist medical assistance, which is not accessible under Taliban rule. This is due to the limited number of specialist doctors remaining in Afghanistan, and the impossibility of Amena’s father transporting her to medical appointments and hospital procedures, given the Taliban are targeting him for his former work as a high-ranking member of the Afghan military.

On 12 May 2020, the Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) supported maternity ward in Dashte-e-Barchi of Kabul was attacked by gunmen.1 The attackers deliberately and systematically killed newly delivered mothers in their beds. It was reported that the attack killed 24 people, including 16 mothers and two newborns and injured dozens. The three gunmen had deliberately attacked the maternity ward, walking past several controls closer to the hospital entrance. Then-Vice President Amrullah Saleh declared that the Taliban were responsible for the attack.4 The Taliban initially claimed responsibility for the attack but denied their involvement after a public outcry. 5 A report conducted by MSF in 2021 found that the attack was most likely committed by members of the IS-KP6 group, a terrorist organization formed by the Taliban.7

Amena Sharifi was one of the newborns on the morning of 12 May 2020 in Dashte-e-Barchi’s maternity ward when the attack occurred. Only two hours after her birth, the Taliban shooters stormed the hospital, killing her mother and shooting Amena three times to kill her. But instead, the bullets hit her leg and thankfully, she survived.

The sheer publicity of Amena’s story also risks the family’s safety in Afghanistan, so we've relocated them to Pakistan, where they now need funding for an entirely new life. In 2020, during Amena’s 24-day stay in the hospital, many media organizations reached out to her father for interviews and wrote about her and how barbaric the Taliban’s act was.19 Her image is now linked with the violence of that day and is widely accessible on the internet.

Heart of an Ace and Project Exodus from the Moral Compass Federation need more funds to assist the Sharifi family, Rafi (Dad) and Aamina (daughter), with shelter, food, transportation, legal fees, rent,and quality of life. Aamina deserves so much more and has already suffered enough in her young life.
