About Hub City Writers Project

The Hub City Writers Project cultivates readers and nurtures writers through its independent press, community bookshop, diverse literary programming, and literacy outreach. The Hub City Press, which has 101 books in print, publishes works of literature and regional history. Together with the SC Arts Commission, it sponsors the SC Novel book publication prize. It also operates the New Southern Voices poetry book prize, and the C. Michael Curtis Short Story Book Prize, both open to writers in 13 Southern states. Among the organization's programs are: The Writing in Place summer writers conference, now in its 21th year; The Watson Brown Fellowship in Arts and Letters, open to emerging writers nationwide; the Growing Great Readers book drive that contributes thousands of books to elementary school students in underserved local schools; and the Hub City/Emrys writing contest in the Greenville-Spartanburg area. The Hub City Bookshop, which opened in 2010, is one of the few independent bookstores in the US operated by a non-profit organization. With annual revenues of $300,000 the Hub City Bookshop provides earned income to operate Hub City's diverse literary programming. The 1,800-square-foot retail space hosts more than 100 readings, workshops and other literary programs each year. It has twice been named "One of the South's Best Bookstores" by Southern Living magazine and was selected "Best Bookstore of the Year" by the Southern Independent Booksellers Alliance in 2019.
