Human Agricultural Cooperative Announces Expansion and Two Major Initiatives
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Fort Wayne, Indiana – November 1, 2024 – The Human Agricultural Cooperative is proud to announce its expansion into Huntington, Indiana, as well as Georgia, Arkansas, Tennessee, and Arizona, as part of its mission to support under-served populations with education, resources, and sustainable opportunities. This expansion comes after several key accomplishments that have made a significant impact on communities across the country.
Accomplishments and Background
Since its founding, the Human Agricultural Cooperative has made remarkable strides in addressing food insecurity and supporting community development:
*Delivered over 1,000,000 meals (3 million pounds of healthy produce) to food-insecure families across multiple states.
*Partnered with local farmers, enabling them to increase food production and provide direct access to healthy food in under-served areas.
*Implemented vocational training programs for over 200 individuals, helping them acquire skills in sustainable farming, entrepreneurship, and various trades.
*Distributed fresh produce to food deserts, providing healthy, affordable food options to low-income families in collaboration with national and local organizations.
*Empowered women through vocational training programs, providing them with the skills needed to secure employment and start businesses.
*Received a grant from the USDA and IDOH to secure food from socially disadvantaged farmers to distribute it to the most socially disadvantaged communities in Indiana.
*Our Executive Director Ty Simmons was awarded the President Joseph Biden Presidential Lifetime Award for his volunteerism and service to our country in the fight against food injustice and lack of equity.
Two Major Initiatives for Expansion
As we continue to grow, the Human Agricultural Cooperative will focus on two critical projects that address food security and support for victims of domestic violence:
1. Share the Harvest Campaign - Indiana and other potential sites
This ambitious $6 million initiative aims to secure 50-100 acres of farmland for the development of tiny homes and a comprehensive educational and vocational training center. This center will provide underserved communities with training in sustainable farming, entrepreneurship, and various vocational skills to foster self-sufficiency and economic empowerment.
Food insecurity remains a major challenge nationwide, with over 33.8 million Americans, including 9.3 million children, living in food-insecure households in 2022. In Indiana, 11.8% of households face food insecurity, and in Allen County, over 13.2% of residents struggled with access to healthy food last year, with 1 in 5 children facing hunger. The Share the Harvest Campaign will address these issues by creating a sustainable food system that benefits communities in Fort Wayne, Allen County, and beyond.
2. Maggie Simmons' Shelter and Vocational Training Center – Huntington, Indiana
We will dedicate 8,000-square-foot of this historic building in Huntington, Indiana,(18,000 sq ft) to helping victims of domestic abuse and supporting women’s reentry into society. The center will provide a retail store, food pantry, intra-county shelter, and vocational training center. We aim to raise $1,000,000 to establish this critical resource for the local community.
Domestic violence affects 1 in 4 women nationwide, with 1 in 5 women experiencing rape. In Indiana, more than 40% of women report being victims of domestic violence, with 67,000 incidents reported in 2022. Huntington County alone reports 33% of women as domestic abuse survivors, and statewide, 60% of sexual assaults go unreported. Maggie Simmons' initiatives will provide a safe haven and offer survivors training in areas such as carpentry, culinary arts, tailoring, and greenhouse farming, giving them the tools to rebuild their lives and achieve economic independence.

The Maggie Simmons’ Women’s Shelter and Vocational Training Center is committed to providing education, resources, and vocational training to underserved communities, with a special focus on victims of domestic violence.
