Built from Broken: A Safe Haven for Hawai'i's Homeless Youth
Aloha nui to our beloved friends, ‘ohana, and compassionate Big Island community, We are Humanity Hale, a grassroots nonprofit rooted in the heart of Hawai‘i Island. Since 2019, we’ve stood beside our keiki and ‘ōpio (our children and youth) walking with them through trauma, abuse, homelessness, and the emotional fallout of the foster care system. With trauma-informed care, mentorship, life skills, and deep cultural grounding, we’ve watched them grow stronger. But now, it’s time to grow something even bigger…a place they can finally call home.
We’re asking for your support to help us take the next bold step: Building our first transitional housing program for youth aging out of foster care!
Right now, 1 in 4 foster youth becomes homeless within four years of aging out. With no family to return to, and no safety net to catch them, these young hearts are left to fend for themselves. They carry invisible wounds of abandonment, instability, and fear. But we will no longer allow them to just be statistics. They are our next generation of teachers, farmers, healers, creators, and leaders. They are Hawai’i.
Our Dream:
We’ve found a breathtaking 10-acre avocado and ‘ulu farm in Captain Cook…a place filled with potential and peace. Our vision is to create 16 standalone housing units here, offering youth ages 18–24, a safe place to call home..a place to heal, connect to their beloved ‘āina and to thrive...But this is just the beginning! We have room to create as many houses as we can for our 'ōpio, and as we continue to receive funding, the more homes we can build for our kids. Future goals include our next project, a fully staffed group foster home and plans to create safe spaces in Ocean View, Puna and beyond. We will not stop until every last child and young adult is is safe, loved and protected!
At Humanity Hale’s transitional farmstead, we offer:
•Safe, stable housing
•On-site therapy, trauma support, and mentorship
•Job and life skills training
•Farm-based learning and cultural reconnection
•A chosen ‘ohana—a true sense of belonging
•College scholarships & trade school opportunities
This isn’t just shelter. It’s their sanctuary…and for some of them, a second shot at life.
Why We’re Turning to You:
We’ve constantly been denied by our government entities, as our youth seem to often land last on the priority list. Land acquisition funding is almost nonexistent, whereas the majority of funds fall under emergency services with zero focus on preventative care. The more time goes on, the more of our children are being left to fend for themselves out on the streets. We will no longer standby and watch this, but we remain positive, and will not give up in our efforts, which is why we’re reaching out to you…Our village. Our people. Our kauhale.
We are asking for your help to raise $550,000 to secure this land and bring our vision to life. This project isn’t just about building homes—it’s about building futures.
Your Gift Will Help Us:
•$550,000: Purchase the farm
(our community’s piece of paradise—where healing will begin)
We are also applying for grants to support:
•$375,000: Build 16 safe, beautiful housing units
•$75,000: Install fencing and 24/7 security systems
•$225,000: Hire therapists, tutors, den mothers, and a farm manager
•$75,000: Cover operational costs and utilities
How You Can Help:
Every donation brings us closer to stability, love, and transformation. Whether it’s $10 or $10,000, your gift becomes part of a much bigger story…a story of redemption, resilience, and a deep love for our future generations. By breaking the cycles of intergenerational trauma, you become a part of a village that refuses to let our keiki & ‘ōpio fall through the cracks.
We invite you to let this movement ignite hope that can ripple out through our community. Together, we can build a future where no child has to fall asleep on the streets, and where every child feels safe, seen, and supported. Thank you for being a part of this great story of change that this world so desperately needs. You are a part of a legacy that will never be forgotten!
With all our hearts,
Charis & the Humanity Hale ʻOhana
