For Mount Sinai Heroes in Loving Memory of Robin
Robin Swerdling Greenfield was born on March 18, 1954 and passed away on April 22, 2020 after a month-long struggle with covid-19.
Her struggle was one of many which is why her family has set up this page in the hopes of supporting an institution dedicated to saving lives and eradicating this virus.
Born in Brooklyn, NY, she soon moved to and grew up in Highland Park, IL with her mother Sarah, father Lou, and sister Liz. Raised in humble circumstances, she went on to graduate from Northwestern University and then Chicago Kent Law School.
She met the love of her life, Larry, and the two were married on February 24, 1984. The two have remained in love ever since. She was a loving and devoted mother to her son, Josh and a beloved step-mother to Julie and Eve.
She rose through the ranks at the New York City Department of Education to become Executive Deputy Counsel for Employment and General Practice, serving 14 chancellors over the span of 36 years before retiring in March of 2019. She was involved in many notable first amendment cases, she worked on hundreds of human rights and employment cases, she assisted in implementing many changes governing the school system including the advent of mayoral control. She was a force to be admired, training scores of young attorneys. Perhaps most importantly is the fact that she retired from the DOE with a work family that cares for her deeply.
After her retirement, she surrounded herself in family, friends, and passion projects. Even after a fulfilling career, she got to do the things she wanted to do. She and Larry spent time traveling around the world taking in the sights at Venice, Corfu, and Montenegro, to name just a few of the places they visited. Much time was spent watching shows on Broadway and simply enjoying the city they loved so much.
Having lived in Paris for a period of time while in college and visiting again in later years, she always wanted to get back to Paris after her retirement, but in the meantime, she loved speaking and practicing her french.
At some point throughout the day, Robin was likely to fill her apartment with the sounds of her piano. She played all her life, and was overjoyed to receive a brand new Baldwin baby grand piano as a retirement gift from her husband. She quickly began to wear down the keys.
Robin was an active participant in life every single day. She will be missed immeasurably by all those who knew her and shared in her vibrancy.
Donating to the superheroes at Mount Sinai's covid relief team who treated Robin, at great personal risk to themselves and their own families, is a fitting way to honor her memory and exemplifies the selflessness and caring she embodied in life.
