Touch Your Roots - Call for those of Spanish descent

Particularly those whose ancestors left Spain for the Hawaiian sugar cane fields (1907-1913) and settled in California and beyond.

Are you of Spanish heritage whose family emigrated to the United States from Spain via Hawaii?

Do you know that you can reach out and discover your Spanish Hawaiian heritage?

Are you a curious genealogist or Spanish cultural enthusiast interested in the emigration from Spain to the United States? We need your support for our work to help descendants and families connect. Please donate.

You may be the descendant of these early 20th-century Spanish emigrants who left Spain seeking promising work opportunities in the sugar cane plantations of Hawaii and, after a short time, moved on to California, a land of opportunity.

Before you lies an exciting opportunity to discover your family’s history and enrich your life. You can find the answers you may have, make new friends, and possibly discover new relatives and cousins.

You can ask:

Spanish Hawaiian Heritage Association (SPHHA)

Born in 2023, it has been established to honor these Spanish Hawaiian emigrant families and their special heritage. At its core are energized members guiding activities and events and a digital place to discover and learn. We would like you to connect with us.

The Spanish Hawaiian Heritage website (sphha.org) contains volumes of information and data, a digital place where you can immerse yourself in a journey that spans oceans and reaches across decades, weaving a tapestry of unique experiences and stories of Spanish and Hawaiian heritage (folklore, events, Spanish culture). You can explore meticulous research and historical information and paint a vivid picture of your ancestry. You can trace the steps of your forebears through our curated ship manifests, shedding light on the voyages that brought Spanish and Hawaiian families together in the Pacific. More specifically, what was it like to sail from Malaga or Gibraltar, around Cape Horn to Honolulu in 50+ days at sea? And more, learn the pathways to exploring your DNA.

Additionally, you will learn about pathways for exploring your DNA and possibly find relatives. You can stay connected with newly found friends and like-minded individuals by sharing stories, insights, and a passion for preserving the intricate web of traditions and our heritage. Whether you're a descendant eager to explore your lineage or an enthusiast captivated by the blend of Spanish and Hawaiian cultures, you will have found a new home and partnership in life: The Spanish Hawaiian Heritage Association.

Greetings, Friends of Idiot String and The Peripatetic Players,

The Peripatetic Players are back at it again, and they need YOUR help!

In 2019, we created an original work based onThe Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. Our goal was to re-mount this production and adapt the other books in the trilogy into two plays.

This year we begin our quest again!

The Peripatetic Players are raising funds to re-start their quest across Middle Earth! This summer, we will be performing A Lord of a Ring in Suitcase: The Two-Part Trilogy (The Extendish Edition) across Bay Area parks and public spaces.

We'll be at a different park each weekend, offering several performances at each location. So you can see one show, two shows in two days, or both shows in one day! All performances are offered FREE to the public, and your donations help keep this possible.

Even the smallest donations can change the course of this play! Here are some examples of what your contributions can do:

$5 – Gives us Warm Fuzzies

$10 – Ensures our First Aid Kit is well-stocked

$25 – Transports the Players to (approximately) one performance

$50 – Creates a set of mini-costumes for the audience to wear

$100 – Subsidizes the average park permit fees for one performance

$250 – Provides us with printed materials, such as scripts, postcards, and posters

$500 – Buys paint and supplies to make our scenery merry and bright

The lighting of the beacons (aka the start of the fundraiser) will begin on March 13 and concluding on April 3 with a celebratory feast (picnic) at The Golden Hall in Rohan (Cedar Rose Park in Berkeley). Octavia of Earth, Volume 2!!!
Octavia of Earth is a multi-part documusical inspired by the life of science fiction luminary Octavia E. Butler. From 2016 to 2020, Uncaged Library Arts created Volume 1, made up of 9 original songs and found footage short films. Now, we're working on BRAND NEW MUSIC for Volume 2 in collaboration with Bay Area legends Kofy Brown, Katie Cash, Shelley Doty, and Vicki Randle, collectively known as Skip the Needle . We've got the know-how, the creative juice, and the dream team to make the music, and we need your help to bring that music to the people! Donors at every level through December 31, 2021 will be entered into a drawing to win one of three gift cards to the phenomenal Oakland-based, black-owned bookstore Sistah SciFi .

Uncaged Library Arts lifts up stories that sustain the hearts and minds of social change workers in Oakland, the Bay Area, and beyond. In particular, we produce collaborative music, theater, film, and data projects that highlight the struggles and victories of LGBTQ people, people living with HIV, and people of color in our ongoing fights for dignity, existence, and liberation. Since 2016, our flagship project has been Octavia of Earth, our original documusical inspired by the life of Afrofuturist luminary Octavia E. Butler. The project has grown organically through contributions from twenty Bay Area activist-artists and artist-educators of color, a majority BIPOC women and trans people, and primarily queer people overall. Our public performances have nurtured gentle cultural space for feminist BIPOC community and our allies, gathering approximately 200 community members with four workshop performances in 2018, approximately 75 at our 2019 studio album release at the African American Museum and Library of Oakland, and over 400 viewers during our 2020-2021 virtual screening series. We have received overwhelmingly enthusiastic responses from community members who have participated in these events, which provide a unique opportunity to get to know Butler not as an icon or oracle, but as a fully human elder. In a moment when her work has reached a breadth of audiences she never achieved during her lifetime, our grounded, researched approach to Butler’s life and work offers depth of understanding, raising the consciousness of her most ardent fans and elevating a discourse of building a future together.

Skip the Needle : Born from group of friends jamming: all veterans of multiple bands, tours, recording. Shelley Doty (Shelley Doty X-tet, Jambay) guitar, Kofy Brown (Kofy Brown Band, Sistas in the Pit) drums, Katie Cash (Katie Cash, Dolorata, Year of the Fist) guitar and Vicki Randle (the Tonight Show, Mavis Staples) bass. The band is the collective effort of four Bay area bandleaders, each lead singer, multi-instrumentalist, performer and songwriter. Lead singing duties rotate among the members while the others add background vocals. The songs are collectively written to showcase each member’s unique contributions, bringing together rock, funk, soul and fusion in an amalgam that rocks hard and is also musically diverse and complex; carries a strong, socially conscious message but wants everybody to party while hearing it. If Jimi Hendrix, Chrissie Hynde and Chaka Kahn cloned a baby, this band would be the result. Skip the Needle is reckless, eclectic, fearless and fun, dedicated to love and like nothing you've ever heard before. Skip the Needle Rocks the Love.

Support a Queer/Trans People of Color Documentary!
Help us to pay the editing fees for a film sample --this is to gain investors to finish the film.

In 2018, two queer women of color Tina Colleen and Monick Monell began working on the queer/trans people of color (QTPoC) documentary film, "I Identify as Me."

“I Identify as Me” celebrates QTPoC who identify as masculine-presenting/genderfluid women and gender non-conforming (GNC) people. This perspective is often left out in LGBTQIA+ discussions and media/entertainment. This documentary gives folks who can identify with the people in the film a mirror to see themselves in a positive light, while providing a window to allies and potential allies on these experiences and perspectives to inspire a less hostile world for all.

The documentary will also include a body-positive photography series of six non-male people of color. The photography series provides poetic representation for a group of underrepresented women and GNC people who too often lose the battle in entertainment and media to feminine-presenting womxn.

The majority of the film has been self-funded with assistance from sponsors and community support. As a result, we were able to create an official teaser (video above or click here). This year, we created a 3-minute sneak preview and have been traveling with it throughout New York City, New Jersey, Philadelphia, Boston, Ithaca (NY), and soon Chicago. We have received nothing but love and positive feedback from the LGBTQIA+ community.

We are very grateful for how far we have come, but to finish the film we need financial support from small businesses, benefit corporations (B-Corps), individual investors and large grants--this requires us to show them a short film sample. Editing fees to create a high-quality sample is $2000 (with a discount!).

Upon release, the short-term goal of the film is to be featured in film festivals worldwide, community events and on streaming platforms. The long-term objective is for the documentary to be included within curriculums, ie. K-12, college/universities and diversity & inclusion trainings.

With your pledge, we can afford to pay for these editing costs. We only have 30 days to fundraise to meet the payment deadline. Please share the fundraiser with your networks so we can move closer to completing the film.
