In 2014, birders in Indiana commemorated the 100th anniversary of the passing of the last Passenger Pigeon. The Indiana Audubon Society is leading efforts in partnership with the Indiana State Museum and Indiana DNR (Division of Nature Preserves) to erect a historical marker to the Passenger Pigeon.

Indiana was important to the species for both nesting and migration.  The last known wild Passenger Pigeon, for which there exists incontrovertible evidence, was shot in Laurel, Franklin County, Indiana in 1902. This project will erect the marker in Metamora, IN because it lies in Franklin County, the site of the last known wild Passenger Pigeon.  Additionally, the site is near the IAS Mary Gray Bird Sanctuary, and Brookville, the birthplace of one of Indiana's founding ornithological fathers, Amos Butler.
