Passenger Pigeon Historic Marker
Indiana was important to the species for both nesting and migration. The last known wild Passenger Pigeon, for which there exists incontrovertible evidence, was shot in Laurel, Franklin County, Indiana in 1902. This project will erect the marker in Metamora, IN because it lies in Franklin County, the site of the last known wild Passenger Pigeon. Additionally, the site is near the IAS Mary Gray Bird Sanctuary, and Brookville, the birthplace of one of Indiana's founding ornithological fathers, Amos Butler.
Indiana Audubon Society is proud to sponsor this historical marker to the Passenger Pigeon. IAS hopes that you too will support the project by making a contribution commemorating this amazing species and its tragic decline from billions to none.
