Interior Alaska Land Trust

Hi Folks!

I am helping to get the word out about an Interior Alaska Land Trust (IALT) campaign to conserve 300 acres of land adjacent to the FNSB Isberg Recreation Area. Piggy-backing on Haley McCaig’s “Going to Graceland” fundraiser last year, the Land Trust is working to conserve another property in the neighborhood, known as the Dinkins parcel. Together, this area is known as the Cripple Creek Headwaters. (Yes, the same Cripple Creek that flows through the IALT’s Chinook Conservation Park along Chena Pump Road.)

The land includes habitat for ten priority waterfowl and two priority wetlands-associated bird species, including Northern Pintail, Mallard, Lesser and Greater Scaup, Ring-necked Dove, American Widgeon, Solitary Sandpiper, Lesser Yellowlegs, Olive-sided Flycatcher, Rusty Blackbird, and Wilson's Snipe. In addition to the intrinsic value of protecting the habitat of Cripple Creek, the area boasts great recreational opportunities. The Cripple Creek Headwaters property is over 300 acres, nearly doubling the size of the Isberg Recreation Area, and opening up the possibility of new loop trails. The land has several trails that have been used by the public for decades; these trails can no longer be threatened by private closure.

The Interior Alaska Land Trust has already raised approximately two-thirds of the funds needed to acquire and steward the Cripple Creek Headwaters. Let’s all chip in what we can and raise the funds for this final push!

Hi Folks!

I am helping to get the word out for a community action opportunity that will help conserve 90 beautiful acres. The Interior Alaska Land Trust (IALT) is now UNDER CONTRACT to purchase a parcel known as “Graceland” below the corner of Chena Ridge and Isberg Roads. This protects a birch forest and is a part of a large greenspace in the headwaters of Cripple Creek. This parcel alone will add significantly to the Isberg Rec area and gets us all a lot closer to the possibility of adding new loop trails.

And neighbors! Check out the map (below). Conserving this plot protects it from future development, which protects our back yards, berry- picking spots, illicit snow-shoe trails, mushroom foraging opportunities, dog walks and whatever other good clean fun ya'll like to have in the woods.

The hard work has already been done thanks to the dedicated volunteers at the IALT. Now, all we need to do is dig into our wallets, purses, pockets and/or dig up a few coffee cans.
