Emergency PPE Supply Cabinet for NYC
Intro:
We are an international medical non-profit based in NYC started and run by doctors and nurses. For the last 6 years we have been doing medical work internationally and now we need to help right here at home.
One of our founding members is Dr Josh Schiller, an attending ER doctor at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY. He describes how Covid-19 is impacting his hospital, "the road outside has been made into an overflow emergency for Covid patients" and "our ER is becoming an ICU”.
Problem:
New York City is currently the epicenter of the COVID-19 pandemic. We are hearing bleak reports about the availability of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) from our colleagues who are caring for a quickly growing number of seriously ill Corona Virus patients right now. We are hearing that "things are getting crazy" and "there's a rationing of masks”.”
Without adequate PPE doctors and nurses feel increasingly anxious about infecting their patients, falling ill themselves or infecting their families. One doctor in Brooklyn told us that "healthcare workers are so worried about getting infected because of lack of PPE, they've moved away from family or self-quarantine at home."
2 months ago a health care worker would have been fired if they did not follow proper PPE protocol - changing gloves, gowns and masks after each patient - and now, providing care in the center of a pandemic, they are asked to re-use PPE for multiple shifts. The shortage is so grave that a nurse practioner at one hospital told us they have resorted to using diapers as masks.
Dr Wayne Riley, president of SUNY Downstate Hospital in Brooklyn says their gowns will run out by Monday. “We’re going get creative. We’re going to use rain ponchos, we’re going to use garbage bags… We cannot wait for the national stockpile to supply us.”
Sometimes it is just a matter of a critical gap. When we checked in with a practitioner who works in a community clinic which serves the homeless to find out if he was facing PPE shortages, he said he had an immediate need for 10 N95 masks.
Whatever the issue, no health care worker should have to worry about their PPE as they fight this pandemic. They need our help to secure and distribute as much PPE as we can.
Face shields are now rationed and to be reused for multiple shifts.
These nurses are using DIAPERS in lieu of medical masks right now!
How we are going to help:
We are establishing an emergency supply cabinet for our health care partners in NYC. We are going to fulfill emergency requests for PPE - N95 masks, surgical masks, face shields, gowns, and gloves - to help supply as many health care workers as we possibly can.
We will work with our local on-the-ground partners to find out when they are facing critical gaps in PPE supplies on a weekly basis. We will try our best to help make up for as much of any shortfall that they have.
We have already placed orders for PPE from trusted partners we have used for our international work. We are raising the funds to purchase more. We are also building a network to try to find PPE donations from other mutual aid efforts that are already happening.
Our goal is to stock and distribute an emergency supply of PPE and stay in weekly contact with our partners and distribute PPE on an as needed basis.
