Will you join us in helping an Afghan family resettle in their new Richmond home?
I am leading a HOME Team here in Richmond that will be matched with a refugee family to whom we will provide support. My bookclub and I are raising money to sponsor this family through the International Rescue Committee in Richmond. We hope to raise the funds as soon as possible, as there are families already waiting in hotels to settle in a home.
Together we can help a family rebuild their life and gain control over their future. The IRC’s Housing Outreach Mentorship & Education (HOME) program combines direct financial assistance and mentorship to assist newly-arrived refugee families to become self-sufficient and adjusted quickly.
Refugees are provided with funding to cover their first 30 days in the United States and this amount is standard across the country, regardless of the cost-of-living. HOME Teams provide additional direct assistance to subsidize the family’s basic living expenses for five months. The IRC in Richmond asks HOME teams to commit to raising $1,000 for an individual to $3,000 for a family of five or more.
The HOME subsidy is a one-time payment to the IRC, 100% of which will be disbursed to the family to partially cover rent over their first five months in the United States. Through this gift, you can help provide a safety net that alleviates significant financial strain on refugee families during a stressful and uncertain time.
