Help the Foynes Flying Boat Museum
The Foynes Flying Boat & Maritime Museum celebrates the romantic era of the Flying Boats when Pan American and BOAC pioneered transatlantic passenger flights. It was here in this small village that Chef Joe Sheridan invented Irish Coffee in 1943. The Museum also features the maritime history of the majestic River Shannon.
The Museum, founded in 1989, is located in the actual terminal building of the original Shannon airport in Foynes, County Limerick, Ireland, and is home to the world's only full-size replica of a B314 flying boat. The late film star, Maureen O’Hara Blair, officially opened it and was our Patron until her death in 2015. Visitors can explore the role of Foynes in early passenger flights across the Atlantic Ocean from 1937-1945 and the legendary flying boats that came and went carrying celebrities, royalty, rich, famous and desperate refugees alike. Learn about the life and lore surrounding Ireland's longest, most famous river, The River Shannon (Abhainn na Sionainne), and it's prominent place in Irish history and mythology.
Flying boat heritage is now an essential part of the tourism and economic life of Foynes and the south Shannon Estuary. Critically, this heritage is a major item of local pride, supporting local employment and other regional attractions and hospitality services in County Limerick. The Museum also provides meeting facilities for local companies and voluntary organisations, hosting free fundraising events, senior parties, concerts and other charitable events throughout the year. We support and promote culture and heritage initiatives that will create greater public awareness of the learning opportunities and education value of visiting the Museum.
Our award-winning Museum is now one of the most popular visitor attractions in the Shannon region, demonstrating that we have now come full circle and to accomplish all the original goals set out when we were founded. But we can't stop there. We have big plans for the future, not only to extend our current exhibitions, but also to establish a NEW Maureen O’Hara Wing to display her many film costumes and personal clothing and much much more of her memorabilia, generously donated by her Grandson. Success with this campaign will allow us to proceed immediately with these plans and will help us attract funding from Government that will bring more visitors, preserve vital history and increase employment.

We are running this campaign in conjunction with the Irish American Partnership, a registered 501(c)(3) US Charitable Organization, and all donations from US taxpayers will be placed through the IAP. Foynes Flying Boat & Maritime Museum is also a registered Irish charity (charity number CHY10251).
