I’m Tatiana, and I hope you will join me in supporting the rescued animals living at Juliana’s Animal Sanctuary in Colombia. The founder, Juliana, is a dear friend of mine who has dedicated most of her life to caring for hundreds of animals rescued from some of the most heartbreaking conditions, facing many challenges but always sacrificing everything for them while continuously creating awareness of the plight of animals in the country.

While I’m from Colombia and started my animal rights activism there, I had already moved to the US when I met Juliana through Facebook in 2012 when she was looking to move the sanctuary to another property. Learning that someone in my country was doing what I could only dream about doing myself inspired me to support Juliana in any way I could.

Since the sanctuary continued to grow but donations did not, in 2014, I supported Juliana in registering the sanctuary as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization (EIN: 47-3548963) in the United States to reach animal lovers who cared about all animals, regardless of where they live. Juliana’s Animal Sanctuary is the only sanctuary verified by the Global Federation For Animal Sanctuaries in South America and has received recognition from the local government. These certifications attest to Juliana's high standard of care for each resident at the sanctuary.

This outstanding care comes at a high financial cost, which has increased over the last few months because of the severe effects of the El Niño (drought) in Colombia and higher supply prices. Juliana typically covers most of the expenses with her income from her various jobs (besides running the sanctuary!). Still, she lost some of that after she had to care for her dad after an accident.

Your support, no matter how small, will make a significant difference in the lives of 270 rescued animals in Colombia. If we reach the goal, we will cover the sanctuary expenses for three months! Juliana could then dedicate more time to recovering some of her income and establishing projects to support the animals in the long run.

Juliana's animal sanctuary is the first and only sanctuary in Colombia, with more than 140 animals rescued in the last 14 years. We are a legally registered organization in the United States  501c3  and in Colombia
Two days ago we rescued 28 animals in the worse conditions, something we never imagined.

In 2017 I made a public complaint about a person who had opened a supposed sanctuary where he kept animals in poor condition, I learned about this place thanks to a Colombian friend who lives in Canada, who informed me of the abuse and asked me for help. At that time we made several rescues; among those that of our pig Poldark, who arrived with a broken jaw. This nefarious person disappeared from the rest of the animals and left others to die.
In 2019 I made a second documented complaint with videos and images that the same person had opened another shrine that he called “Santuario Vegano Peter Young” ("Peter Young Vegan Sanctuary") when I made the complaint, many activists criticized me, said that I was lying and that I just wanted to closed that place because I wanted to be the only sanctuary in the country (which we currently are), the images I shared at that time showed animals tied up, malnourished, living in dirt, and in tiny cages; the man who ran this place wrote insulting me strongly, so I decided to put it aside and devote all my attention to our sanctuary.
Two days ago I started receiving terrifying images of the animals there, accompanied by videos, something from a movie that would cause the worst nightmares. They asked me for help to rescue the animals and in an Olympic rescue we saved 28 animals from this horrible place, also a bull and a calf that are currently in another temporary place while they organized their arrival here.
It is important to understand that having a sanctuary is not a game, much less to pretend, there is a lot of work and it is very difficult; it is not simply opening a place that has apparent conditions for the animals to be, it is about giving them the best life possible, this is only achieved with a high level of commitment and responsibility, at this moment we are the real hope for this type of animals in our country. We warned everyone about this awful place that called itself a sanctuary and nobody wanted to listen to us, and these are the consequences.
As you already know from the quarantine situation in which our country is, the businesses which help the sanctuary to generate income are closed, so at this moment we depend 100% on the donations of all of you.

My names is Juliana Castaneda Turner, I am the founder and director of Juliana’s Animal Sanctuary in Colombia, the only animal sanctuary of this country.

Colombia is dealing with a natural disaster, a flood that has killed more than 250 people. Heavy rain flooded 17 neighborhoods, displacing hundreds and we are going to see how many animals we can save. Human relief organizations are searching to find people who are missing and possibly swept away in mudslides and fast-moving water. No one is sure about the number of animals impacted by this disaster. Fundacion Arca, an animal aid group, has arrived to help out.

We must raise funds in 3 days as fast as possible to save animals from drowning, starving, injuries, or hypothermia by helping this organization, sending more volunteers, vets, food, kennels, and bring animals that need care back to our sanctuary. A helicopter will transport the supplies to the location and the vets will travel as fast as they can by car.

Hi, my name is Juliana and I am the co-founder and director of Juliana’s Animal Sanctuary (JAS).

We were the first Animal Sanctuary established in South America and we are currently the only Animal sanctuary in our country, Colombia. We are also a registered 501c3 non-profit in the United States.

Many of you know my story, if you don’t, I want to share it with you because to know my story is to know my heart...

I was just 5 years old when I decided I could not continue eating the body of animals adopted a vegetarian diet, however, over last 12 years I have completely abstained from any animal byproduct as a vegan.

I love all animals and so when I was just 11-years old I decided to become an activist for all animals. I dreamed that someday I would have a big place to save all the animals in the world. From that day, I worked hard and saved every coin I could until I had enough to put a downpayment on a piece of land to make my dream a reality. However, in 2016, I lost this land due to some legal manipulations. 

Fortunately, I found that there was a big group of people outside of my country willing and ready to help save the animals, just like me. This is how I found my international family and now, thanks to all of you, we have a new property, and over 93 rescued animals (cows, pigs, chickens, turkeys, rabbits dogs and cats) under our care. 

Juliana's Animal Sanctuary has many programs in Colombia and internationally to help animals. Our mission is to educate people in Colombia and abroad about animal equality and their rights. For this reason, we have a few programs that are creating a positive future for animals here and in other countries.

You may be asking yourself: “Why should I help animals in other countries and not just the animals in my own country?”

Well, why not try to help them all, I say! After all, we are all living on the same Earth and our focus here has always been to teach equality for all beings, everywhere. 

However, my heart wants to ask you for a little bit of extra help for the animals in Colombia, why? 

You see, a big percentage of the animals killed here are for meat consumption that is sent to countries like yours.

On top of that, there is a tremendous lack of education about animal rights in South America and Colombia, especially. So if we don’t educate them here, it will be a great travesty for the people and the animals here. 

Some facts you need to understand:

The number of street dogs in our country is enormous compared with other countries. Just in the capital city, Bogota, there are an estimated 1,600,000 street dogs!

Our animal sanctuary is literally the only hope for the animals raised for food in Colombia, not only as a safe haven but also to educate the public. There is simply nothing else like Juliana's Animal Sanctuary in Colombia. 

We have some wonderful programs here to help animals:  

- Free vegan cooking workshops for parents, Juliana made the first vegan cookbook in Colombia "Cooking with jaggy" You can find it on Amazon too.

- Spay and neuter programs for street animals (around 100 animals per month).

- Presentations at schools to promote animal rights and distribute free vegan snacks along with the country’s first animal advocacy comic book (JAS made the first animal rights comic in Colombia)

- We are the only Colombian organization with a 3D virtual reality experience to show people the reality of farmed animals.

- We have an international adoption program where we send dogs who can’t find a home in Colombia to the US or Canada.

- We also have a special care area for senior dogs and other senior animals at the sanctuary.

Apart from that, we have regular tours of the sanctuary to help people change the way they see animals and we've found this experience to a very effective in inspiring them to stop eating meat.  

There is no doubt JAS is making a big difference in Colombia and South America and we want to inspire other Latinos to help animals and create more organizations.

One big advantage of being located in Colombia, South America is that it is much cheaper to run such programs than it would be in other countries. To give you an example, the annual operating cost of our sanctuary (that means food and care for all the animals) is only $70.000 a year. Compared with other countries, this could be 1/3 the cost of what they have to pay. So every donation here goes a very long way. 

However, to cover all our educational programs we need around $40,000 a year. Thankfully, this is not a big concern because we have the support of other organizations in the US for this. So with this campaign, we want to focus on covering the basic needs of the rescued animals here. 

This is where we urgently need your help — to cover the operating expenses of maintaining all the animal residents and future rescues under our care for 3 months
