30th Birthday 50k for Kairos PDX
This fund raiser will be open through 12/1. Please read below for details on the run!
BACKGROUND:
The US 50k road ultra running world championship committee has been accepting time trials to qualify for selection to the team during the pandemic. This fact caught my interest earlier in 2020, and so I attempted my first ever road 50k in July on what ended up being the last day of my grandfather's life. It was difficult to run hard while coming to terms with what it means for a family member to be critically ill on the other side of the country during a pandemic. Ultimately, that mental stress caused me to step off the course with just 5k to go.
So, I have planned to go for it again, and most importantly, I'm raising funds for KairosPDX, an education nonprofit here in Portland with a strong focus on racial equity. My grandfather spent his retirement years teaching and learning, earning his final degree at age 81. Working to make that love of education accessible for all is a much greater goal than this athletic pursuit, and one that I am excited to work towards through the effort.
The original plan was to schedule the attempt to coincide with my 30th birthday on 11/4, but due to an injury the run itself has been pushed back (updates below!). The fund raising component will be open through Giving Tuesday, 12/1/2020.
