Cameras for Equality in Uganda
We are KIOO Project.
We change gender dynamics in marginalized communities by teaching photography to girls who, in turn, teach photography to boys. Girls gain self-confidence while building leadership & presentation skills. Boys recognize the leadership ability of girls & see them as equals. Gender equality is more than a “girls only” effort. It can only be achieved when both girls & boys understand the importance of living as equals.
We have run workshops with restaveks (child slaves) in Haiti, students living in the slums of Kenya, children from the Dalit caste (the Untouchables) in India, low-income, minority students in Brooklyn, and children living in rural Ethiopia with no electricity or running water. The moments they capture have taken our breath away.

Where KIOO is going next.
In January, through a partnership with She’s the First, an organization that supports girls’ education in 11 countries around the world, we are advancing gender equality at Arlington Academy of Hope in Bududa, Uganda. Initially, girls will learn various photography techniques. After which, they will use their new found photography & presentation skills to teach their fellow male classmates. This unique journey ensures that both girls & boys experience the rewards of an arts education. By holding gender-themed discussions, and exercises in building self-confidence & leadership, both girls & boys will gain a sense of their self-worth & how to be agents of change within their own communities.
At the end of the 2 weeks, a gallery show exhibiting the students’ work will give the local community an opportunity to celebrate these budding, young photographers.
All the camera & printing equipment we bring to Uganda will remain at the school so the local staff can teach our students more photography techniques throughout the rest of the year. Our goal is for our young students to continue reinforcing these new gender dynamics.
