My family has been spending summers at Lake George since the late 1800s, the Lewis family lived on Cleverdale, the Daltons on Assembly Point, and coming full circle, the Orbans will now live on Cleverdale - about 50 yards from the original Lewis camp! Summers at Lake George have always been special to me-- trying new things, meeting new people, and making new memories each year. However, due to an increase in usage of chloride in road salts, the algae in the lake has increased by 33% and invasive species are slowly working their way in– killing the beautiful natural ecosystem. Most recently on land near the water, an invasive species known as the hemlock woolly adelgid has been– quite literally– sucking out the life from hemlock trees around the area. These trees make up about 80% of the watershed’s forests, and the trees also play a very important and vital role in helping keep the lake clean and cool. However, it doesn’t end there. There are six known aquatic invasive species living in the lake currently. Through this GoFundMe, you can donate money to the Lake George Association– an association that helps protect the lake from any threats such as invasive species, pollutants, imbalanced water quality, and others. The Harris Bay Hustle, a fundraiser ran by my family and I-- happening in Harris Bay in Lake George, will be donating all the funds to the LGA.

Summers in Lake George have always been special to me. Seeing the Minnie-Ha-Ha ferry pass by our boat while tubing, learning how to waterski and wakeboard, going cliff-jumping and hiking, and learning how to drive a boat are only some of my core memories from summers here. My family has been spending summers at Lake George since the 1800s, and Lake George is not only a special place to my family and I personally, but it has many unique qualities as well.

It is considered one of the clearest and cleanest large lakes in the world, due to the mountains surrounding it creating a slight watershed, keeping it clean. However, due to an increase in usage of chloride in road salts, the algae has increased by 33% and invasive species are slowly working their way in– killing the beautiful natural ecosystem. In the words of Thomas Jefferson, “Lake George is without comparison, the most beautiful water I ever saw; formed by a contour of mountains into a basin... finely interspersed with islands, its water limpid as crystal, and the mountain sides covered with rich groves... down to the water-edge: here and there precipices of rock to checker the scene and save it from monotony.”
