Hi, this is being submitted by Marion Skeete of LegacyMakers International Ministries, 501(C)(3), for Christian LegacyMakers of Kampala, Uganda, our beloved friends and partners:
OBJECTIVE
The “Go-Back-To-School Conference” aims to equip Ugandan Christian students who are going back to school in January 2025 by dealing with the urgent moral and familial decline in Ugandan communities. This Conference will ensure that the children have the right attitude, sense of sound judgment and discernment, and mental and spiritual strengthening to withstand peer pressure and conformity to non-Christian behaviors. It also aims to restore hope and confidence for those who are struggling economically, by providing material support, such as scholastic materials for classroom and out-of-classroom engagement.
The theme of the gathering is “I Am a Treasure with a Greater Treasure in Me” (1 Cor. 6:19-20). The Conference will host one hundred (100) students from the age of seven (7) to eighteen (18) years old. We have categorized these students into three different groups because they have different needs. We have a category of 7-10 years (the Sunday school or young children); 11-15 years (pre-teens/teenagers); and 15-18 years (the adolescents). All those categories have their own unique needs, and we hope to give attention to the crucial ones that we are already aware of, and are yet to discover. The 3-day program will include biblical and life skills instruction, such as “My Body-Christ’s Temple,” “Respecting Parents and Elders,” “The Be-Attitudes of Matthew 5,” etc. Fellowship and game activities will include soccer, jump rope, arts and crafts, storytelling, etc.
The Conference will be held from January 15th to the 18th at Promise Christian Centre, Kampala, Uganda.
The support group of women will provide homemade petroleum jelly and detergents for the children. These products are also being made and sold as a local fundraiser for this project. Also, a children’s book, “Discovering the Hidden Treasures of Africa,” is being published by LegacyMakers as part of the fundraiser.
The total budget that would be needed by mid-January is $4,000 USD. The biggest percentage of the budget will go to scholastic materials, which will cover the students for school. However, we will also be supporting the nutritional needs of the students, with products such as milk, bread, greens, fruit, fish, etc. We would also need to cover the expenses for first-aid medicine, transportation, conference facilitation, toiletries, etc.
BACKGROUND
Go-Back-School Conference is a meeting/fellowship that has been organized by Christian LegacyMakers in Uganda in collaboration with their United States partners, LegacyMakers International Ministries 501(C)(3).
Research in Uganda has discovered that students adopt behaviors that they find at school, even more than those at home, because they spend almost three-quarters of the year at school, and the rest at home. In addition to this, all the students come from various backgrounds and families, and are exposed to different experiences and cultural practices that impact their lives. Increasingly, many students are making poor choices that are destroying familial relationships, community harmony, and cultural traditions and values, and will inevitably negatively affect their future. Their behaviors at school include smoking, drinking alcohol, drug abuse, homosexuality, lesbianism, and fighting, to mention just a few. Worst still, there are also spiritual dangers, where those who come from cultic beliefs backgrounds have a strong influence on those from clear religious environments. We must help the children who have grown up in Christian families to take their Christian life seriously, and live out their faith without compromise. With the right support and equipping, these Christian children would be able to help other students overcome hardships, and make wise choices for their present and future lives.
May God richly reward you, in advance, for your generous contribution to a worthy cause.
Much Love & Gratitude,
Marion Skeete
