LeRoy Heritage Museum is publishing a new book about the history of Laquin, Pennsylvania, that existed from 1902 to 1932 and then was abandoned after the Civilian Conservation Corps left in 1941. The book will include all new photos and historical information about this lumber town that have never before been published.
The book has been compiled and written by museum president, Matthew Carl. Matthew is also designing the new book as he has done with several publications in the past. He is donating his time to complete the project so that all funds raised can go toward printing costs. The net proceeds will benefit the local history preservation work of the LeRoy Heritage Museum.
The book will be 360 pages, hardcover, with hundreds of photos and a history of the town that hasn't been told. If the fundraiser exceeds its goal, additional pages will be added to the book containing more photos. Enough material exists to do a 500-page book, but the additional pages will depend on the support received.
The book is scheduled to go to press in September and is slated to be released at the beginning of December 2023.
Matthew has been researching the history of Laquin for 31 years and during that time has written on the topic, given numerous walking tours of the former town, and presented programs about it across Bradford County. Matthew has previously co-written and designed the book, Barclay Mountain: A History, published in 2007 by the Bradford County Historical Society. This book was based on the research of Dr. James S. Smith and is filled with great information, however, Smith died before finishing his work, and so much more has been found in the years since that Smith never knew about. The new history will fill in the gaps and will be a great companion to the BCHS book.
Matthew has also completed 8 other book projects over the past 16 years including the reprinting of Thomas T. Taber's Ghost Lumber Towns of Central Pennsylvania.
Matthew's YouTube videos about the history of Laquin have had a total of almost 30,000 views and he has gathered and exhibited, at LeRoy Heritage Museum, the largest collection of Laquin artifacts that exist anywhere. Following is an example of one of his videos.
Your support of this project is greatly appreciated. Thank you for partnering with us to make it possible.
