LWSRA Inclusive Playground
WE NEED YOUR HELP! Lincolnway Special Recreation needs $30,000 in donations to meet our goal to build a Universal Design ADA wheelchair accessible playground. The playground will be located next to the LWSRA recreation center.
A fundamental part of a child’s development is the ability to participate in physical, social, and emotional play. However, play can be limited for children with certain disabilities because of environmental barriers, especially on the playground. Children with disabilities may feel excluded because they cannot use play environments. Inclusive, accessible playgrounds address the obstacles that the physical environment can pose for children with disabilities and promote not only physical activity on the playground but also social play. Your support will help LWSRA ensure that the children and youth with disabilities in our community have access to a playground that meets their needs and allows them to participate in physical play with their peers with and without disabilities.
LWSRA has provided adaptive and special recreation services since 1976 for individuals with disabilities through a cooperative agreement with their member park districts which now include Frankfort, Frankfort Square, Manhattan, Mokena, New Lenox, Peotone and Wilmington Island Park Districts. LWSRA programs are for individuals with special needs from preschool through adult who have recreation needs that are not met by regular park district programs.
