“We had each other. That’s how we won.” - Lando Calrissian
Recently, some of the ugliest parts of the Star Wars fanbase have reared their heads in a targeted harassment campaign against The High Republic Show host Krystina Arielle. These messages and threats were specifically designed to demean, demoralize and intimidate her for no other reason than daring to be a visible black woman in our fandom. While shocking and sickening to see examples of the messages she's received, this comes as no shock to many after similar attacks against women of color involved with Star Wars such as author Justina Ireland, as well as actresses Naomi Ackie and Kelly Marie Tran. This isn't even counting the thousands of BIPOC Star Wars fans who have endured online hate for voicing their opinion, cosplaying as a character or simply expressing a love for Star Wars in a space that a hateful segment wants to reserve exclusively for themselves.
We've seen such a heart-warming outpouring from fellow fans like ourselves expressing support for these women and condemning those that stir up these disgusting attacks while monetizing off of the hate. We believe that for every action there must be an equal and opposite reaction. If parts of the fandom want to use their platform to disenfranchise and intimidate black women, we--as responsible fans--must do the opposite.
The Loveland Foundation is a non-profit organization offering access to therapy and other mental health services to communities of color--particularly to black women and girls, cis or trans--who might not have access to benefit from these services otherwise. 100% of donations will go toward this cause.
If you are unable to donate, you can still help us get the word out via social media, podcasts or on YouTube. Help us do some actual good to combat the hate.
