The Scarborough and Gorham Alpine ski teams are raising money in support of Maine Cancer Foundation in honor of Stephanie Ferrie, mom of two of Scarborough’s finest racers. The teams have dedicated their race on February 5, 2025 to Steph, and hope you can support them as they support her memory.
Stephanie adopted the family slogan, “Live the Voyage” when she convinced her husband Kevin to buy a sailboat, leave the world behind, and cruise the Caribbean while their four kids were young and at an impressionable age. The Ferries left 3 years after Stephanie’s first bout with cervical cancer, and cruised for 2 years, ending only when her cancer returned, nearly five years after her original diagnosis.
Her family motto, “Live the Voyage” was about living life, appreciating every moment in the present, even if life was handing out lemons. Her vision took the kids to a dozen countries in 2 years and gave the the kids the confidence to make friends from all over the world.
Stephanie believed life was best learned outside of a classroom, and she put this to life in the sacrifices she made to experience this with her children. These years this gift she bestowed upon her children will forever shape their character, and the choices they make in life.
Steph will best be remembered as the mom who never passed up a chance to go for a run, who questioned everything and all authority, and loved her kids the best way she knew how.
Her words, from a Facebook post on her Live the Voyage Page:
I am going to fill you in on a little secret. Life can suck AND be beautiful all at the same time.
That’s right. Life can be difficult but still be enjoyable. I never thought that would be possible until I had cancer. I remember my first chemotherapy and radiation appointment, and later that day, I went for a run with a friend and then went ice skating with my family. I thought to myself, “wow, what a weird day,” - or the day my crazy girlfriends joined me during chemo and we laughed uncontrollably for hours. I almost felt guilty for having fun, for enjoying the day, because I almost felt like that may be illegal, how can the word fun be used on the same day that I had my body pumped with radiation and chemicals to kill cancer?
But I did. And for the next months, I had crap days and beautiful ones, and sometimes it happened on the same day. And you know what? You can, too. It’s okay to hate where you are in your life, but in order to keep going, one must find the beautiful. There are so many gifts to still be had in these difficult days.
