Mamba Marathon #24.8
Welcome to our GoFundMe. Our names are Gracie Waller and Bergan O’Connell; we grew up together in the South Bay of Los Angeles looking up to Kobe during his prime years as a Laker. Growing up, sports were a defining part of our friendship and we have been cheering for the Lakers together since we were little.
Fast forward to our sophomore year of college, we trained and completed our first marathon. We had always intended to run our second marathon together for our senior year. However, since the 2021 LA marathon is tentative due to COVID-19, we decided to make our own race for a cause we both deeply care about.
After the tragic loss of Kobe and Gianna Bryant, among others, we knew we wanted to do something in their honor. We decided to run 24.8 miles as an ode to Kobe and his Mamba Mentality. In addition to our run, we wanted to raise money to benefit the Mamba and Mambacita Sports Foundation. The Foundation exists to further Kobe and Gianna Bryant's legacy in sports which includes a focus on equal participation, compensation, and leadership opportunities in sports at every level. The organization aims to develop skills, enhance character traits, and expand personal values that ultimately empower and inspire self-confidence.
Our goal is to raise $5000 to donate to the foundation. While we realize this is an ambitious goal, “the most important thing is to try and inspire people, so that they can be great at whatever they want to do” (Kobe).
