MILE 10 - ISRAEL

I traveled to Jerusalem, a holy city for three different religions, and met an ultra Orthodox Jewish woman named Tzrale. She showed me her way of life in which women are responsible for raising children as well as financially supporting the family. Unfortunately, job opportunities are scarce, and many women dream to start their own business. With the help of local non-profit MATI, Tzrale and other Orthodox women are able to receive business training and access to capital to advance their careers!

QUICK FACTS:

• Jerusalem is a holy city for three different religions: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Despite its historical and spiritual significance, it is the poorest city in Israel.

• The Orthodox Jewish community is 1/3 of the population of Jerusalem. Traditionally, women are expected to financially support a family.

• Tzrale enrolled in MATI’s program to launch her own business as a doula.

• Each year, MATI helps 900 new businesses open. In total, over 50,000 people have completed their program, opening 13,000 new businesses and creating over 40,000 new jobs in Jerusalem.

• $1000 creates one new job through MATI. That’s less than the government cost of one month of unemployment.

All donations directly benefit MATI USA, a US-based 501c3 nonprofit supporting the work of MATI Jerusalem. MATI works to stimulate the economy of Jerusalem by boosting job and new business creation while eradicating poverty and joblessness through programs that encourage and facilitate entrepreneurship.
