Preserve the home of VA Sarracenia purpurea!
Meadowview is a 501(c)(3) non-profit focused on preserving and restoring pitcher plant and associated habitat throughout Maryland and Virginia. I had the privilege to visit earlier this year to see firsthand the amazing work Phil and the Meadowview team have been doing. I felt like a kid at Christmas to pull up on the Joseph Pines Preserve, in a blinding snowstorm nonetheless, and see such a wonderful and properly cared for Longleaf Pine ecosystem in Virginia. Truly an amazing site!
While the Joseph Pines Preserve is a wonderful place in need of targeted donations, this is specifically a GoFundMe for the Central VA Preserve. The Central VA Preserve protects 96 acres of globally rare gravel bog and surrounding uplands in Caroline County. The protected properties contain what’s left of the northern-most native population of Sarracenia purpurea in Virginia, as well as at least one other state threatened plant. I too had the privilege of visiting this site set in oak barrens, and walked down to view the purpurea growing in sphagnum mats all along the gravel stream.
There is a conservation easement in place to protect the plants found on the preserve, and there is continual ecological restoration and reintroduction necessary to ensure the plants continue to thrive and flourish. While Phil and the Meadowview team do a wonderful job in restoring this magical place, they really need our help in securing the property and paying off the bank loan used to acquire the property. The deadline for the loan is fast approaching, and here’s the carnivorous plant worldwide communities chance to make a huge difference.
So calling all growers, friends and family of growers, and everyone who wants to lend a hand to help permanently secure this property for Meadowview. Many hands make light work, and together as a community, we can all pitch in a little to secure a lot for Sarracenia habitat.
