It started with one single skateboard.

 

 

Founded by Israel Dejene, Megabi Skate is a movement that began in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Along his travels, ‘Izzy’ saw the positive impact skating had on young people and decided to teach the local kids how to use skateboarding as an outlet for expression, action, and community building. From one skateboard to an entire movement, Megabi Skate has become a pillar of hope for the Megabi Kids and garnered international support from the skate community and beyond.

 

The 'Megabi House,' an extension of the Dejene family home, is where many children come daily to seek refuge and take part in programs that focus on leadership, artistic expression, empowerment for young women, and of course, skating. Now more than ever, many children rely on this safe space amidst the debilitating impacts of political unrest taking place in the country.

 

 

On May 7th at 5:00 AM, a fire broke out at the compound leaving the majority of their living quarters destroyed. No one was harmed, but it left Megabi Skate with half as much space to operate as a community center and safe refuge.

 

 

This phase of fundraising is to restore the building and repair any damage caused by the fire so that Megabi Skate can operate at full capacity again and expand its offerings to the young people it serves each day. If necessary, funds with be allocated for emergency use due to the uncertainty of the climate in Ethiopia.

 

 

Current goals following the restoration:

 

- Expand the original skating area

 

- Add features like a roof for protection from too much sun or rain

 

- Improve the ‘DREAM BIG’ stage where community sharing takes place

 

- Build a music studio for lessons and recording

 

- Improve study area with computer access

 

- Expand availability of tutors
