The Military History Center of the Carolinas (MHCC) is a noprofit organization that maintains a Military History Museum and also does outreach history displays. The MHCC volunteer members provide historic military vehicles and equipment displays for education institutions, veteran's events, parades, and events with local, state, and federal entities such as the National Parks Service. MHCC has provided displays at events for Honor Flight fundraisers, and the actual departure flights for the veterans on those flights. MHCC provides support to around 70 events yearly.
The Military History Center of the Carolinas partnered with the Greenville Downtown Airport in 2016 to begin work to open a Military History Museum. We took over an old Butler building and gutted it and renovated the front portion into restrooms and a gift shop. Thanks to a local construction firm, Triangle Construction, we were able to get most of the materials needed for the front. Companies like Roto Rooter also helped us get the plumbing fixed and upgraded.
We opened the Museum in February 2018, for weekend and special event hours. In our first year, we had around 3500 visitors.
We have also provided historical education field trips for several school groups around Greenville, SC and several Boy/Cub Scout troops.
We are registered members of the South Carolina Federation of Museums. We are also a registered 501c3 with the IRS and South Carolina. We have this year received approval to acquire surplus government military equipment. Our goal initially is to get some armored vehicles like a tank or armored personnel carrier and a Helicopter (prefer a UH-1 HUEY).
We have exhibits that display Military History thru the 20th Century, from the Spanish-American war thru the current conflicts in the Middle East. Our exhibits are a mixture of donated, loaned, and acquired artifacts. in 2018, we acquired a replica WWI ambulance, thru a grant from a local hospital. Local businesses have given us educational grants, which helped us create our education space and purchase specific artifacts as well as things like display cases and signage.
Our goal with the Military History Museum is two found. First is to provide education on Military History, to preserve history. Second is to Honor our veterans and provide a resource to the community to maintain and keep alive their legacy of service.
We are working in 2019 to begin Phase 2, which entails finishing the main Museum hall. We need to install HVAC, insulation/drywall, and replace the whole building's roof.
Thus, we are looking to raise $129,000. after generous discounts by local companies, our current need stands at...
Roof replacement and insulation - $60,000
HVAC - $34,000 ---This has now been fully funded and is in process to install. Thank you all
Insulation and Drywall - $25,000
Facilities maintenance fund (for ongoing general care of HVAC, roof, plumbing, electrical) - $10,000
Any funds beyond our goal would be deposited in a foundation to assist us in maintaining the museum operations and growing our collection of artifacts and expanding the museum in the future.
