Violet is a 2000 lb. Shire horse. Shires are an endangered breed on the critical list with the US Livestock Conservancy. There are only about 2000 shires in the world today. Violet is bonded to her brother, Mason. Both were rescued by our Sanctuary last year.

Violet and Mason were hauled to Tufts University over 200 miles from the Sanctuary so Violet could get a standing sedation CT scan of her hoof. She was diagnosed with a keratoma in an very unusual location. Tufts performed surgery to remove the keratoma. The hole in her hoof is about 2" deep by 1" wide. The Shires stayed at Tufts for a week in the hospital. They are both back at the Sanctuary now, where recovery will take several months, including regular bandage changes. We are left with a very large hospital bill and farrier bill for both of them. $4120 for the hospital, $480 for their farrier, and $1000 for shipping them.

Shire horses are listed as an ENDANGERED breed by the US Livestock Conservancy. In 1960, the American Shire was nearly EXTINCT, and it is believed there are less than 2000 shires left worldwide!

This BONDED brother and sister are 18 and 20 years old and stand 17-18hh!

They've lived and worked side by side their whole lives as NY carriage horses and simply MUST be rescued and retired together. We only have until December 20 to get them out of the slaughter pipeline! They are currently in PA and we need to raise $5000 to get them safe, vetted and transported to NJ, where they will be loved and spoiled at My Happy Place Animals Sanctuary.
