The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is one of the largest organizations in the United States dedicated to improving the lives of individuals affected by mental illness, and promoting mental health awareness. These proceeds will be dedicated to raising awareness around mental health.

More information about National Alliance on Mental Illness of New York City Inc: The National Alliance on Mental Illness of New York City’s (NAMI-NYC) mission is to help families and individuals affected by mental illness build better lives through education, support, and advocacy. 1 in 5 individuals in the United States live with a mental illness. The other four are family, friends, colleagues, neighbors. We all deserve free, affordable, culturally responsive health and mental health care — and NAMI-NYC has been on the forefront of that fight for over 40 years.

As many of you may already know, our dear friend and esteemed colleague, Damien Boiardi, passed away recently. His sudden departure has left a profound void in our hearts and within the community he took part in. With a heavy heart but also with a deep sense of purpose and determination, I look to honor his memory.

Damien was more than just a coworker or salesperson but a confidant and a friend. His intelligence shined through his individualistic perspectives that were always engaging, even when not agreeable. He brought charisma and energy, even when in pessimism, that made him a joy to be around. He was a deep thinker who interloped his love of history, politics, cars, watches, and sneakers. He was able to climb the corporate ranks over 15 years since starting during the doldrums of the GFC; Sitting shoulder to shoulder with him during that time period was not an easy chore and it is one I miss every day.

In June of 2024, I got very close to successfully ending my life. By God's grace, I survived and started my journey of healing myself, and in that beginning, I found that I felt seen and real in the most unreal moments. Those breathtaking moments that words can't describe. Because of this, I chose to start a photography business. To show my gratitude for my second chance and to raise awareness and resources, I have decided to dedicate 10% of my profits to NAMI and encourage my viewers to donate even if they don't purchase anything because you never know what the people in your life are going through, and it is almost always a shock when the worst happens. I hope by this we can prevent more people from feeling the way I felt when I made the decision that could have cost me my life.

In many schools, there's a real shortage when it comes to mental health support. For students like me dealing with mental health issues, it's like facing a big problem with no one to turn to. I remember feeling so lost, like I was stuck in a maze with no way out. But thankfully, some teachers stepped up in a big way. They didn't just teach us math or English; they were there for us when things got tough. Their kindness and willingness to listen made all the difference. They gave me a safe space to open up and shared practical advice on how to cope with what I was going through. But I know I'm not the only one struggling. Lots of teens are dealing with their own battles, often without anyone knowing. Schools need to wake up to this reality and start providing better support for students' mental health. Every kid deserves to have someone they can talk to and rely on when times get tough. I hope by sharing my story, it helps others see the importance of having caring mentors in school who understand what we're going through and can help us find our way to a brighter future.
