Jansen Quiros Memorial Fund
Ever since my brother, Jansen, passed away the day after Christmas in 2017, my family created a Jansen Quiros Memorial Scholarship in his honor.
This year, my family and are awarding students who have made a difference in their community and in the STEM field.
Jansen Quiros, JLHS Class of 2014, went through life with a fierce determination and genuine passion in everything he undertook, excelling in both academics and athletics. After his untimely passing at the age of 21, the Quiros family and friends established the Jansen Quiros Memorial Scholarship in his honor. It will be given to graduating high school students who excel in STEM subjects. The ideal candidate will participate in athletics, as well.
At James Logan High School, Jansen was Team Captain of both the Cross Country and Track and Field programs. He helped drive his Cross Country team to its greatest season in the school’s history. He balanced athletics with an equally rigorous academic workload, completing several advanced placement and honors courses. He graduated Summa Cum Laude with a 4.5 GPA, ranking in the Superintendent's Honor Roll all four years.
This pursuit of excellence continued while he was studying at the University of California San Diego. Passionate about space exploration, Jansen was pursuing a B.S. in Physics with a specialization in Material Physics, as well as a Minor in Engineering Mechanics. His collegiate achievements are extensive: Judicial Board member for Sixth College Student Council, President of Pi Alpha Phi Fraternity, and Quality Assurance Intern for Space Micro, Inc.
He served as a Propulsion Team Lead Engineer for Students for the Exploration and Development of Space (SEDS@UCSD), where he mentored his own team of undergrads on the advancement of rocket propulsion technology. Jansen led his team to test a satellite engine at Purdue University, and, shortly after, present a new rocket engine design at NASA Ames. He was an established point of contact with the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center and was expected to meet with the organization again in mid-January 2018. Jansen will be greatly missed, but with this scholarship, he will never be forgotten.
