The Daniel N. Winsett Memorial Scholarship
It is with our deepest sympathies that we announce the passing of a beloved and caring teacher at Newtown High School, Mr. Dan Winsett.
Mr. Winsett wore many different caps during his tenure here at Newtown. He was a Physical Education and Health teacher, Associate Athletic Director, the Varsity Baseball coach and JV Softball coach. There is no doubt that from the late 1980s when Mr. Winsett first arrived at Sandy Hook Elementary School until his retirement in 2008, he had an impact on literally thousands of lives here in Newtown.
We all have fond memories of stories told, smiles from the light-hearted jokes and kind thoughts from the man who always had a smile on his face and a helping hand to offer.
Some of Mr. Winsett's colleagues decided to start a GoFundMe page as a first step towards establishing a perpetual scholarship in his name. We are asking any former or current students, parents, colleagues and/or community members to donate to our cause.
Each year, the teachers will choose two students to be awarded the Daniel N. Winsett Memorial Scholarship. The criteria for this award will be simple, ANY graduating Senior moving on to post secondary education the following Fall will be eligible. The committee will choose two recipients who demonstrate an ability to lead in the classroom, exhibit care and compassion in school and within the community and participate in at least one afterschool activity and/or sport.
Please consider donating to our cause! If you should have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out at the link below. Also (and probably just as important as your contribution), PLEASE drop a memory, a laugh or a story in the comments below! Let us all keep the memory alive of a truly generous and caring individual that helped shape so many lives.
THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!!!
