STOMP Troopers 2019
Who wouldn't love a geeky, massive, raucous, sci-fi themed Mardi Gras art parade?
Believe it or not, many people imagine that teens with autism would never enjoy participating in the Intergalactic Krewe of Chewbacchus parade.
How wrong they are! Meet the STOMP Troopers, a talented and unique troop of 22 young people with exceptionalities, ages 9-21. They costume. They drum. They march. They perform. And, if you're very lucky, they might throw you something, mister.
For 3 years, the STOMP Troopers have marched in the Chewbacchus parade with the world-famous Preservation Hall jazz band. It's a powerful chance for these funky cool teens to not only be themselves but to enjoy the spotlight. The STOMP Troopers Project is dedicated to proving that teens with autism can not only participate in culture, they can create culture.
But parading is a huge undertaking. The STOMP Troopers take two months of weekly facilitated workkshops to prepare. They sew costumes, make doublooons, rehearse drumming and marching. They also learn to cooperate, be safe out in the community and to tolerate noise and crowds
in a fun setting. We need to raise $4200 to meet our critical expenses: staff, costumes, drums, ear protection and other essentials.
Our special goal for 2019 is to fully represent the greater NOLA community by making ONE HALF of our spaces availble for free to low income and minority participants.
