North American Board of Breastfeeding and Lactation Medicine

Help us improve access and quality of medical care for lactating mothers, other lactating parents, and breastfeeding infants throughout the United States and Canada! A new medical professional organization, The North American Board of Breastfeeding and Lactation Medicine (NABBLM) has created the knowledge and practice standards required to board-certify MD and DO physicians in the field of **Breastfeeding and Lactation Medicine**. We need your financial help to do the following:

1. Cover the cost for the development of a scientifically rigorous board exam that will meet the qualifications to be certified by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA). The development of this exam is already in progress! The cost of hiring a qualified psychometrician to create an evidence-based, scientifically sound board exam has precluded progress in this field for the last 30 years. The time to donate is NOW to bring this dream to reality!

2. Build a digital platform for registration and administration of our board exam.

3. Hire organizational staff.

4. Create a fellowship pathway for physicians who would like to become trained in this medical field. The training would be provided by board-certified Breastfeeding and Lactation Medicine physicians.

An increasing number of young physicians have recognized the need to provide evidence-based breastfeeding and lactation medical care for their patients, beyond the scope of counseling that is provided by non-physician lactation consultants.

Until now, there have been no requirements for training and testing standards to practice Breastfeeding and Lactation Medicine. By establishing board certification, NABBLM will provide a pathway for specialty training, improve insurance coverage for breastfeeding and lactation care, and advocate for more widespread medical education and research in this important field.
