NYC Cops and Kids Boxing Gym
Our nonprofit was started 35 years ago as a positive alternative to gangs and drugs for young people in at-risk neighborhoods. Our two locations in Staten Island and one in Brooklyn are a free, safe haven for young New Yorkers to exercise, study, and connect to positive adult role models. Our gyms become like family, connecting cops and kids in a positive way.
Our outstanding boxing program has produced two Olympians, eight national champions, and dozens of New York City Golden Gloves winners. Our academic tutoring and mentorship has helped send dozens of young people to college and into careers in the armed forces, law enforcement, and the fire department. We have given away thousands of dollars via our $50-for-an-A-average incentive program.
We are the only free boxing program in New York City; some kids travel 90 minutes each way to reach us. We help any way we can, including connecting homeless youths with shelter, getting displaced students back in school, and distributing free food and clothing for the holidays.
Our program has been featured in the Netflix documentary Counterpunch , on Belgian public television, Pix11 , by The New York Times , and many other media outlets and has been generously supported by the NYPD Boxing Team, Clipper Equity, the NYCHA, Bloomberg Philanthropies, the Theodore Atlas Foundation, Seven Eight Capital, Everlast, Addidas, Dustin Hoffman, the Classic Car Club of Manhattan, and many other generous individuals and organizations.
Last year we experienced a flood that devastated our Brooklyn gym. We also lost a major funding source that helped pay our liability insurance and trainers' salaries.
We are in need of immediate help to continue to operate. Renovation of the Flatbush facility would also allow us to expand our reach beyond the 600 youths we currently serve per year.
