Haiti Orphanage Trip
PLEASE HELP ME AND MY KIDS WITH OUR HAITI MISSION TRIP. WE WILL LIVE AND WORK IN AN ORPHANAGE. YOUR MONEY WILL HELP THE ORPHANS IN HAITI!
On January 12, 2010, near Haiti's capital city, Port of Prince, a massive 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck. Devastation laced the country leaving a disastrous aftermath. Houses were destroyed, children were left orphaned, and over 200,000 people lost their lives. Thanks to the 2010 earthquake, as well as other events over the past few years, Haiti now has the highest number of orphans in the Western hemisphere.
One of my best friends from college, Shannon Perkins, is an art teacher at Key West High School. Because Key West is only 735 miles away from Haiti, she watched her very own students suffer through this devastation. Having such a high Haitian population in Key West meant many felt the effects of the earthquake as their family back home dealt with the horrible event. My amazing friend put ‘One World One Canvas’ together to do her part in giving back.
With your help, my children and I have the chance to help these children like not many ever will. We hope to travel with my friend, the president of OWOC, along with a handful of her high school students to Haiti, where we hope to make an impact. Our goal is to use the power of art to give these children more than just food and clothing. We want to give them love and compassion. We will carry out art workshops, teaching the teenagers of the orphanage basic art skills and providing them with the materials they need. From there, we will join up with the freshly taught teens to teach the younger children. Our next steps will be helping the rest of the community by painting buildings and even providing needy families with food. Yes, there is a language barrier. We will travel with a translator though, and do our best to learn the basics of their native language, Creole. To make all this possible we must raise $3,000.00 each, or $12,000.00 total for our family. It is so important for you to understand that any size donation can and will help.
I suggest visiting the OWOC website where you can view pictures from past trips, read first hand experiences from previous travelers, and learn the true goal of this incredible organization. I also encourage you to watch the video below. I know its long, but I promise it's worth it. It will not only help you to understand our goal, but also leave a deeper impact, leaving you more grateful for what you have than when you started the video. Obviously, I want to help the children off Haiti, but my hope is that by helping the children of Haiti, my own children will be helped as much as the Haitian children. One of my goals is to have my own children leave Haiti more grateful for what they have and to really understand that life is not going to end without that new latest iphone, or the clothes by a certain designer.
While it will leave an impression on us that is sure to last a life time, this is no vacation. For over a week we will live in an orphanage, we will bathe with water from a bucket, we will not have toilets and we will work from morning until night to make those children smile.

I hope that by doing so you find a way to brighten your own day because you will have surely brightened mine as well as a child who deserves nothing more than to smile.
